I have been searching this forum for New Riders of The Purple Sage and I can never find any tabs. I have found Panama Red but that's as far as it goes. The Riders did some classic pedal steel guitar stuff and some of it could be great for a beginner like me. Like the stuff Garcia did, Glendale Train for example. Why is it that you really don't see any of their stuff on this forum? |

Buddy Cage was the steel player,...he has a web site; I've been to it B4, but I don't remember the address. Maybe someone else can advise us; I'd love to take another look at it. Regards, Steve |

Thanks for the responses, I appreciate the help. MaryLou is a little tough for me right now, but practice makes perfect. I was really looking for Glendale Train, or Lonesome LA Cowboy. Easy stuff to start. |

I was referring to the songs that Jerry Garcia played steel on as easy. I couldn't possibly play any of Buddy Cage's stuff at this juncture. I have only been playing the pedal steel guitar for a couple of months now. I'm looking for music that I played on guitar years ago when I first learned how to play 6 string acoustic guitar. And the New Riders where all easy beginners chords, not to elaborate like Garcia's steel playing. |

Thanks for "Mary Lou!" What is the riff in "Glendale Train" (album version) that comes right after "...at half past nine". It sounds like four quick small chords descending to the I (which is a "D") 1------------------------------ 2------------------------------ 3---12B--11B--10B--10---------- 4---12C--11C--10C--10---------- 5---12C--11C--10C--10---------- 6------------------------------ 7------------------------------ 8------------------------------ 9------------------------------ 10-----------------------------
This does not sound right. I only have it on vinyl and the record-player is not hooked-up to hear it again. [This message was edited by John Lockney on 27 March 2005 at 07:44 PM.] [This message was edited by John Lockney on 27 March 2005 at 07:45 PM.] |

There is very little tab around of any NRPS stuff. Garcia only played on the one album, and quite frankly there's not enough folks with tab skills intrested in garcia to tab it out. Cage is much harder to cover, and there's NO tab on him save the Panama Red tab I have and the above Mary Lou. Buddy neither reads nor writes tab, so that doesn't help. Most of us who are covering Cage are doing it by ear. Even a partial tab of one of their songs would be pages long-they treated steel as a lead instrument, and he very rarely laid out. Plus, tab doesn't convey the FEEL he has-that's a big part of his sound.
