Darrell McCall played in FtWorth last night and had Dickey Overby playing steel. All I can say is if you folks that live in this area didn't go hear these guys, you missed two of the greats in country music. What a show. Wish we could have more shows like this one.

McCall and Overby together again?! Yow, that's like an Emmons and Price reunion! Fantastic pairing of musicians. Get the Darrell album "Tennessee Volunteer Reunion" from your usual sources.

I heard that Dickey is now living in Medina TX, about 50 miles from San Antonio. Additionally, Butch Cornwell has recently relocated to San Antonio. Both of these in addition to Rick Price, Denny Mathes, Roger Edgington, Kenny Groman, Randy Reinhardt, etc. etc. etc. (please excuse the omissions, but its 5am and I just got back off the road).

So I still contend that, outside of Nashville, San Antonio is the per capita steel guitar center of the world. The talent in that town is just awesome, IMHO. However, a very close second, also IMHO, is Dallas/Fort Worth Metro area.

In a related topic an out-of-towner asked me recently "why are all you Texas steel players are so damn quick to stand up for Texas?"

I told her, "Lady, if you played steel guitar for 5 hours every night, you'd be damn quick to STAND UP for ANYTHING!"

Please excuse all regional braggadocio, posing, and chest thumping

Herb,

I heard the same thing...yea, Dicky is supposed to be back in this area. Personally, I can’t wait to run across him! It’s been years since I have had the pleasure of seeing the “Bumpkin’” play. San Antonio is a funny area! On the occasions I want to go out and hear a “good” steel player (to get some inspiration for lifting my playing out of the dumps!)...I simply have WAY too many choices! I read things here about “Well, if I want to go see a real player it is (fill in the Name)...because he is the only one in a 100 mile area!”. That must be a frightening, and sad thing. I guess I was blessed by being born here, grown up with these guys, and having the local steel guitar community put up with me for all these years.

The good news is...I still live here, so there is SOMEONE in San Antonio that doesn’t play as well as you do!! Of course if you miss lunch one more time...I’ll move!! Then the competition gets a lot more tuff!!

PS. Butch Cornwell managed to stay "out of work" for about 2 weeks. (What a wonderful player he is!!) We conspired to introduce him to enough people that we got him a "road" gig real quick! He is working with Chris Chestey (sp?) out of Austin. Oh well...one more guy that might turn down a gig before they call me!

There is a really great 5-cd box on Bear Family Records from Darrell Mccall containing all his work till the mid-seventies i believe, on one cd Dick Overby is on every song, and that's the one i play most.
