I heard him on a recording called"Steel guitar Odysee" and he made a record in the 50's called"swinging steel guitar" on sage records.
He also played on a Commander Cody record, that's all I know about him.

I replaced him in the Eddie Dunbar band in Jan.1995 in Reno and he was working a day gig doing slot machine maintainance, and playing sporadically around Nevada at that time. I don't know about now.BTW,he plays and interesting tuning.Technically,it's E9 but the A&B pedals are backwards. In other words, when his pedals are down, everybody else's are up.So,with pedals not engaged,it's an A6.He gets the same licks as everybody else, just backwards. His back neck is a standard C6. Nice guy too -MJ-

Saw Ernie play with Commander Cody several times in the early 70's. One of the first masterful steel players I'd seen. He knocked us all out. He sounds great on the Commander's Live in London double album, too.

Thought that was Bobby Black.

I know Ernie filled in for Bobby for a few weeks, but I don't think he did any sessions with Commander Cody.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

The last time I saw Ernie play, was at Harveys Lake Taho around 1983 or 84 I think??
He was playing for Freddy Powers, who wrote the great song I always Get Lucky With You, and Merle Haggard was on guitar that nite. Oh what a nite! Ernie was very proud of his Sho-Bud cross over. His favorite player was Speedy west. Ernie was a great guy and always in demand back when I was living in Reno. Maybe we could ask Jimmy Youngblood if he knows what happened to Ernie?? If I remember correctly, Ernie told me he was with Bob Dylan when they recorded an album called "Music from Big Pink",I never heard the album though. Take care.

Ernie was with Commander Cody for more than a few weeks, and he recorded at least one entire album with him (the title escapes me, but I think it was Cody's first one). I saw him with Cody on two occasions, about a year apart. Strangely, when I had my heart attack last February in Reno, my night CICU nurse was his ex-wife! She told me that he's not playing much anymore. That's a shame, as he's a true stylist and a very recognizable presence on the instrument.

Ernie Hagar played with Cody when Bobby took off for a while (I think he was back in Nashville trying to break into session work at that time). He played on two albums, I believe: Don't Let Go, and Lost in Space.

Ernie played with a guy named Larry Hosford in Northern California in the early(74-76) seventies. They cut one album together,"A.K.A. Lorenzo", which actually had a locally charted single("Wimmin Got Me Swimmin"). In my opinion, this album was the best thing he ever did; a perfect balance of steel, lead, and vocals. Ernie was also featured in a book written about Cody called "Starmaking Machinery". If you ever get a chance, buy it!. It is a fascinating look at why Cody failed to get the national radio play necessary for a long career. Pete.

The last thing i heard on Ernie Hagar was that he was living in Las Vegas and not doing any playing. this info is a couple of years old so I am uncertain of it's reliability. I will try to update it though. He truly is one of the greats

The book that Peter is talking about, is a really good read, it's all about their 'big new record deal' and the studio, the politics, promotion and live gigs that went on while it was all happening.
The author was on hand to see the record company pull in someone else to play a piano part on one of their sessions!.

Starmaking Machinery: The Odessy Of An Album.
By Geoffry Stokes.
{1976} The Bobbs-Merrill Company Inc.

Pete, I'm going to have to find that Larry Hosford album, Ernie is sensational.

I too have been a Commander Cody fan for years. I believe THE one album that Ernie
Hagar recorded with CC&TLPA had a great song on it, called "WHEN THE SUN SETS ON THE SAGE"; I may be wrong here, could have been Bobby Black........but Ernie did do an entire album with the Commander.
Oh well.....I have a lot of REAL albums stowed away, and it's a real chore to sift thru {are not in alphabet order} them.

"Lost in Space" was a great album - Hagar played some beautiful stuff. There was a song called "Hawaii Blues" where he threw in some classic Island sounds - a bit of "Blue Hawaii" made it into his solo. Great stuff- I get excited just thinking about it, and may have to dust off the old turntable tonight!! I recall "Sunset on the Sage" being on the "Live From Deep in the Heart of Texas", which was Bobby Black (and that is a real real good live album)- maybe there was an Ernie Hagar version, but I'm not aware of it.

Well, guys glad you all remember Ernie,Ernie plsye only on one Commander Cody album.
Their first on Warner Bros in 1975.It's an Eponomys record, with one of ten greatest record covers I have ever seen,A space drawing by Cody's brother Chris Frayne.
The Steel parts are terrific, indeed Bob,Hawaii blues with a Blue Hawai steel solo,Willing,California Okie,Four five times,That's what I like about the southetc. a Must.Except for the first record of Cody it's all Bobby Black(the1st is West Virgina Creeper who sound as abeginner self taught steel player.Ernie Hagar made I think 2 solo albums.

My understanding was that Ernie Hagar played on one or two Commander Cody tours and on an album from 1975 simply called "Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen." I have been looking for CC&HLPA album with Hagar for years, so if someone has it, please let me know, I'd like to get a tape of it.

I saw him with Cody at one of the Day On The Green concerts at the Oakland Coliseum. Great player and a great gut. I used to visit him at a Music Store in Santa Cruz, California where he used to give lessons. Too bad I never took any from him.

Peter, I remember his stint with Larry Hosford. My brother (he was old enough to drive) and I would make every Hosford gig from Santa Cruz to San Francisco. Fantastic stuff. I still have a cassette of his album.

I was in college in upstate N.Y. back in 1973 or 74 when my college band got the chance to open for the Commander. I had been playing steel for a very short time and had a big ol' Fender 2000(D-10, ten pedals, no knees). We played a **** poor amateur set and then Cody with Hager came on. They were fantastic. I'll never forget it because it was my first stint on steel opening for a name band and because Earnie Hagar showed me what a real steelplayer could do! All these years have passed and I still can't approach the level of playing I heard from Hager that night in the Alfred University gymnasium.
