I'm starved for pedal-steel soaked honky-tonk and C&W from the late 50's to the '60's. What are your recommendations for artists/albums, well known or obscure?

thank you,
Drew

For that great 60's & 70's steel sound, don't forget about Buddy Charlton and the E.T records.

I have a good friend that is a bass player and singer and also a disc jockey on a local radio station. A few days ago he brought over to the house a new CD that the station had just gotten in. It is by a new group out of Austin and they are doing some real country that is great. The name of the album is "Full Western Dress" by a group called "The Derailers". Marty Muse is the pedal steel player. On the song "Play Me The Waltz of The Angels" the final chorus is played by just the pedal steel and a rhythm guitar. Buck Owens is also a guest singer on this song. Well worth a listen.

Bear family records has a box set of Hank Thompson that is unbelievable !
It costs alot of money and it is worth every penny. Its like a complete history of how the steel should be played in honkytonk music.

Steel player heaven. Twin steels on a bunch of tracks !

After you get the "steel summit" vid put this one at the top of your xmas list.

Hi Drew,
There is one album that towers above the rest. It's called George Jones - "Cup Of Lonliness-The Classic Mercury Years" It's a double CD with 48 killer honkytonk tunes. I hear a lot of what I think is Buddy Emmons, and the whole thing is just great. It costs @$20 or so, and you'll love it. Some other excellent ones are the afore mentioned Wynn Stewart "California Country", Ray Price "The Essential 1951-62", Jerry Lee Lewis "Killer Country", Faron Young "Live Fast, Love Hard, Original Capitol Recordings 1952-62". Also try a recent one from a few years ago: Buddy Miller "Your Love & Other Lies". This is my favorite country era also, and I used to have a band (Mental Revenge) that played that stuff exclusively. Gary Claxton was the singer. He's now in Nashville and if anyone down there wanted a good hardcore singer they should look him up.

Bob,

These two are my favorites...

Earnest Tubb and Loretta Lynn-"Mr. and Mrs. Used to Be." (still in print, and available)

Earnest Tubb-"My Pick Of The Hits" (sadly, out of print...used copies are around...worth looking for though! If you can't find a copy, let me know and I'll get a tape to you...no charge)

Drew,

One of my favorite honky-tonk CDs is...

Gary Stewart-"Gary's Greatest" (still available on tape and CD...Gary was kind of a cross between Jerry Lee Lewis and Webb Pierce.)

I don't know if it is available on CD, but Hank Thompson's album "Songs For Rounders" has long been a favorite of mine.

I may be frank and earnest but that doesn't mean y'all have to misspell Ernest Tubb.

I have to post again, to second Joe Goldmark on the two CD Geo Jones set "Cup of Loneliness". another fine compilation that displays the evoluton of steel in honky-tonk, plus it has the INCREDIBLE recording
"MR. FOOL", one of the most intense vocal performances George ever recorded in any period of his long career- other highlights "Out of Control" "Relief is just a Swallow Away" (ahhh!) and it's got "Window Up Above" to boot- what a collection!
The original recordings... not the pallid remakes of later years (pallid by comparison of course... don't get me wrong, George is always amazing- but sometimes the remake production decisions were.. welll.. let's not go there)

also cool for comparing how two greats interpret the same material- there are a few songs in the set usually associated with Ray Price that Geo. covers "Heartaches by the NUmber" and "(I'll be there)If you ever want me".

good stuff

And I have to post again to third it. I also have the CD set and it is all the above. The cassette I mentioned seems to be distilled (how appropriate) from the CD set. Or it's all drawn fron the Mercury years. And yes, Dave, Mr. Fool kills me every time. And how about Just One More (and then another) and how about that harmonic excursion in the steel ride on Hearts In My Dream.

The way to get saturated with Honky tonk is by watching "Stars of the Grand Ole Opry" video tapes, filmed in the '50s. See Jimmy Day, Buddy Emmons, Walter Haynes and others get big fat tone with beautiful Bigsby steels through Fender tweed.

Everyone,

Thanks for all of your faves lists.

Yes, Hank Thompson rules. "Mark of a Heel" is one of my faves by him.And the Grand Ole Opry tapes also rule, I've got one with Ray Price, ET, and Jim Reeves.

Keep'em comin.

cheers,
Drew
