![]() ![]() Tele, Nobody specifically, but Cambridge music seems to get the most steels. They have 2 locations, one in the Fenway, then one in Cambridge. Great place for regular vintage guitars also. There's a guy close to town(Stoneham or something), Tom Cass, who does repairs and sales out of his house. I can dig around for his number if you need it. Only met him once and it was 2 years ago. |

![]() ![]() Gosh, I forget the name of the place, but there was a music shop in a small town/suburb on the road on the way to Ft. Devens. The ownner was a steel guitar fanatic to whom I gave a cassette of Buzz Evans featuring him on steel and guitar. Buzz is originally from Adams, Mass. where his mother still lives. John Macy is also from Mass. It seems to me that it was @ 45 mins west of Boston. This was @ 1985. Wish I could be of more help. |

![]() ![]() Wayne, I don't know who you're talking about, but here's a few towns between Boston and Ft.Devens: Acton, Concord, Fitchburg, Marlboro...maybe that'll refresh your memory, I'm dying to know who it could be! Though I've never met him, I guess Doug Beaumier lives out in Northampton. Thanks! |

![]() ![]() Yes, I teach in Northampton. The music store where I teach www.downtownsounds.com has an old 6 string Magnatone lap steel in stock. The price is less than $150, I believe. We also have a new Zumsteel student model pedal steel in stock (3 & 3). The price is about $850. Tommy Casella used to live in Stoneham... he now lives in Gardner, Mass. He rebuilds and sells pedal steels out of his home. Tom does fantastic restoration work. He totally rebuilt my Emmons D-10 back in 1988. He always has a couple of rebuilt pedal steels on hand. Tommy's email is: tcass@banet.net phone: (978) 632-5878 The steel shop that you're thinking of was called Fitchburg Music. The owner was a guy named Al Isles (I'm not sure of the spelling). He was an Emmons dealer at one time. For pedal steel lessons in Boston, contact forumite Sandy Martin MDsongs@aol.com dougb |

![]() ![]() Yeah, I'd have to say that Cambridge Music would be your best bet if you're right in Boston/Cambridge. I've never even seen one in any of the other stores around town. The one in Cambridge usually has a couple pedal steels on the floor, and a few 6 string laps. The sales people are a bit "undereducated" when it comes to pedal steel, though! |

![]() ![]() Folks, that you for your input....actually I live in Germany but will visit my sister-in-laws family in a couple of weeks. Any information could make a pretty boring stay much more interesting! |

![]() ![]() The Music Emporium, in Lexington' Mass., is one of the world's leading dealera for acoustic instruments. They usually have a few Dobros, Weissenborns, Nationals, etc. in stock. Lexington is about a 30 min. drive from Boston. |

![]() ![]() Al Isles in Fitchberg seems to ring a bell. If you run into him, ask him if he still has that cassette of Buzz Evans! |

![]() ![]() The first steel I ever bought was right outside the Army base at Edgewood in 1981. I honestly don't remember the guys name but he was the guy shown taking a steel out of the case in Winnies Winstons book. It was a s12 E9 MSA green 5/4. I tried to learn how to play it but gave up after 6 months and took it back. He traded me even for an accoustic guitar. It took me until 1991 to get back into it... ------------------

![]() ![]() Buzz Evans came back to Mass last year to play at the Mass Steel Bash. He also sat in (on guitar) with my band that weekend. It was a blast... Buzz loves to play hot jazz riffs on both pedal steel and guitar. He can dress up a 3 chord song like no one I ever heard! Buzz has a web site that is probably linked at b0b's home page. dougb

![]() ![]() I bought my first guitar, a 69 Emmons (which I still have) from Al "Curly" Eyles at Fitchburg Music in 1972. Tommy Cass set it up and added the first 5 knee levers. Al was a killer player, but would never give lessons. There are some great photos of him in the Dick Curless box set on Bear Family Records. I believe he is retired now. By the way, Tommy is a fine, fine player, and got me going as a beginner. Kept me from pitching the guitar out the window more than once!
