Help me, please.
Somewhere in a past life, I remember some information I came across about a pedal steel being used on a Dire Straits CD. Am I dreaming this? What album and who was the player?
Thanks for your help.

Hi David Galloway:

I believe that steel guitarist Paul Franklin actually toured with Dire Straits for a period of time during the early 1990s. He also recorded on several of their albums.

The one Dire Straits CD I know of for sure with PSG is "On the Night", and it's Paul Franklin on pedal steel.

And I might add that Paul's playing on this cd is one of the best examples I can think of where the steel is played in a traditional manner ie: without distortion and with typical good PF tone and made to fit the music perfectly just by note selection and proper feel for the music, oh yeah, it's a live recording.
There is also a video of a concert that this version of the Dire Straights did of a large concert in England that is quite well done.
I believe PF also played on a later Mark Knofler album and while PF's playing is fine I don't think the material was that good on that record. One of those CD's you listen to once and put away.

Didn't Paul play on the tune 'The bug'? I heard that Knopfler tune on a local rock station. Sounded like Franklin to me! And didn't some gal named Mary Chapin-something-or-other record that same tune recently?

Paul played on a release Dire Straits' had out 10 years ago or so, called The Notting Hillbillies. I thought it was interesting. Some of the tracks were fairly good. One in particular; Go Your Own Sweet Way. I never got exactly what audience this was aimed at, maybe just the one listening for new ideas.
By the way, the song mentioned above was probably played on C-6th, but it lends itself real easily to E-9th.

I've been noticing a lot lately, on old pop & top 40 type rock tunes, how many had PSG on them. Who played on the tune that goes "Come Monday, it'll be alright. Come Monday, I'll be holding you tight..." ?
Great, great PSG on it!
