Aloha,
In reguard to another thread, I have been trying to find a way to trim down my rig, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience w/ SWR Strawberry Blonde Acoustic amp?...It seems to be a very transparent amp, has a XLR input for my Dobro, Clean enough for Steel ( I hope )...But, can you overdrive it without a stompbox for Electric Spanish?...Any input would be greatly appreciated, and my back thanks you!
Mahalo,
Mike

Hi Mikey,

If you try it with steel let us know how it sounds. I have thought about getting one of those for my mandolin. Thanks

SWR amps are great bass amps, and even fiddle amps, but I really hated the way my steel sounded thru SWR.

Personally, I'm not very impressed with the SWR amps, ESPECIALLY the bass amps. The reason being, a fellow I work with bought a 100W bass amp (combo) off them. I think it's called the workman? Anyway, he had problems with it getting too hot then shutting down. We opened it up to see what might be wrong, and seeing the heatsink on the finals was a joke. It was a plate approx. 1/8" thick and approx. 2"x4" in size. Not nearly big enough in my opinion. We had another friend's amp opened up at work to do some work on it, it was a Fender KXR100. The Fender's heatsink was ALOT bigger than the SWR's. That is what I don't like about the SWR amps. A good acoustic amp you may want to consider is the Crate CA125(D) and CA250(D). They also have an adjustment for the line level out. The only Fender acoustic that I know of having a line out is the Acoustasonic Pro. Peavey has the Ecoustic 112. When my buddy was lookin for an acoustic amp (he plays a J40 Martin), we compared the Fender to the Peavey and liked the Peavey better (more natural sounding), then compared the Peavey to the Crate, and liked the Crate the best and wound up buying the Crate CA125. The "D" model has the digital effects. Again, this is just my opinion. Maybe not all SWR amps are as bad as the one I saw opened up.

I recall ROLAND offering an "acoustic" amp with the XLR input along with the seperate guitar & mix/aux channels. The amp had a 12" speaker @50 watts & two 5" speakers @ 25W for mids & highs. This is a fairly new amp and I have not tried it but would like to get something for my Dobro/mandolin.

Hi Paul,

the "Workingman"-series by SWR is cheapo-line and can not be compared with the standard SWR Amps and, most of all, cabinets IMHO. I've played Bass for a few years and have to say that of all the stuff I've played on I liked the SWR most because of their versatility and their focus on useful soundmanagement like really good EQ's, aural enhancers and so on.

I never played my steel through it and that leaves me guessing.

Martin, I kinda figured that is how it would be with the SWR's. That is why I stated I was not impressed with the one I saw. If SWR made all their amps that chinsy, I don't think they'd be in business very long. I'll have to check out their better line sometime!

Actually I made an error in this post, the amp I was looking at was a CALIFORNIA BLONDE...I believe it is their top of the line acoustic amp, has 2 seperate channels w/ seperate EQ...It's not a bass amp, per say, altho it says it can be used for acoustic basses...Doesn't anyone work at a music store?...then they could check it out..I think I'll repost w/ a different subject..
Mahalo,
Mike

I've got a California Blonde (the amp, the amp I tell you!). My Ped-A-Bro sounds very good through it, my son's acoustic Bass sounds great through it, but I really don't care for the sound of the pedal steel through it.
