![]() ![]() John Swain used to play in a band by the name of the Gabe Johnson band in the early 1980's. He played the NY metro area and I believe he lived in NJ. He had both and Emmons D-10 P-P and an Sho-Bud (Professional?) as I recall. Anyone know his whereabouts and if he is still playing out? He, John DeMaille (of the PSGA), and Larry Campbell were three of the local steel players I would seek out whenever I had the opportunity. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() John came to the Bethlehem Jam at BIll Lawrence's and played great- lots of fat chords- great Chalker-esque C6th stuff. And a really nice guy to boot. We rode up to PSGA together, he lives near where I work... I know I left that slip of paper right... now where the heck... maybe Jim Cohen can help; I seem to have misplaced the many envelopes and scraps of notebook paper I wrote John's number on multiple times... you'd think I woulda put him in the computer, but nooooo. |

![]() ![]() John Swain Jsplane@aol.com I used to do sound for John Herald, Larry Campbell inspired me to play the steel and Larry Federman inspired me to use a Palm-pedal. [This message was edited by db on 10 February 2000 at 08:47 PM.] |

![]() ![]() Yes, John's still playing. In fact, he's playing both Friday and Saturday nights this week. You can reach him at 609-586-5301. He just bought back his old pushpull after many years and still has his original (beautiful!) Sho~Bud Super Pro. He's my pickin' pal and a fun guy. |

![]() ![]() Boy, speaking of John Herald and Larry Campbell (and Cindy Cashdollar) and who was John Heralds beautiful fiddle player???, Cindy Cashdollar gave me an LP called "The Woodstock Revue (or something like that)" and it has all these guys along with Happy and Artie Traum. Great album. Cindy does her song "Slide Mtn Rag" on it and Larry Campbell does some beautiful steel stuff on it. I used to have a tape with John Herald doing a beautiful ballad about the demise of the last passenger pigeon. I didn't know Larry Campbell toured with Roseanne, no doubt connected up thru the Shawn Colvin, John Leventhal (her husband), Greenwich Village folkie connection. Larry C. used to play with a band named the "Buddy Miller Band" and I used to catch him every Wednesday nite at a Montauk LI bar called Christmans back in summer 1980. I was good pals at the time with Clarence Clemons, Bruce Springsteens sax player. Clarence used to goof around on my Sho Bud Maverick (may she rest in peace) and was real into country music. I took him to see the Bud. Miller Band one rainy Wed. nite and 20 minutes or so into the show, Clarence dissappeared. I thought that he might be in some trouble, we both had a good buzz going and we both drove the 1/2 mile or so to the bar in my car. He was no where to be found. Next thing I know, I look outside the door and there he is, running back from where we lived in the dark, rain pouring down thru a puddle filled dirt parking lot with his saxaphone case. He played with the band that night and I can still remember the smile on Larry Campbells face. The audience went wild. Clarence played with them the following Wed. nite, and we set out to the bar on yet a third Wed nite, but the word had gotten out about Clarence playing there and the traffic and crowds were bad, so we turned around and went out somewhere else. That Larry Campbell played everything, fiddle, banjo, steel, 6 string, mandolin, you name it, an awesome musician. I last saw him live in the early '80's with Suzy Tyrell, a crazed fiddle player from the Greenwich Vill. scene. Does Larry every visit this forum? |

![]() ![]() Oh, and thanks for the info on John Swain. I just sent him off an email. I hope to catch him playing out when I head down to NY metro area next weekend (president's weekend). Anyone want to join me for a beer and catch a show if John is playing next weekend? |

![]() ![]() Cindy's husband, Frank Campbell is a good friend of mine and a great bassist. Is he any relation to this Larry Campbell fella? ------------------ |

![]() ![]() Good question Herb, Cindy's family is from the Woodstock, NY area. Her brother still lives up there. Anyway, it may be the case, although, Campbell is a pretty common last name. Is your buddy also from the NY state area? You can contact Cindy via email thru the asleep at the wheel website. Last I knew, the email address was (this is Ray Bensons email address actually): "aatw@jumpnet.com" and their website address was: |

![]() ![]() Wow, this thread really brings back memories. John, in the early '80's I used to go every weekend to Rodeo, a NYC C&W bar in the East Eighties just to see Larry Campbell and the Buddy Miller Band. Buddy would really tear it up (e.g., "You Win Again") but for me of course the real attraction was Larry's playing. I remember telling Buddy in a somewhat-overserved state: "You're talented but he's gifted." I think he just grinned. A little farther south (47th St.?), Ray Gantek was blowing my mind at O'Lunney's, a classic honky-tonk in midtown Manhattan. Ray lived in CT. He had a white Emmons, and the notes would just drip out of that guitar like maple syrup. Then there was the Lonestar Cafe, down in Greenwich Village... those were the days. |

![]() ![]() Frank, So forgive me for my ignorance evidenced by the next question: The Buddy Miller that Larry Campbell played with isn't the same Buddy Miller of Emmylou Harris fame (and married to Julie Miller), is it?? |
Frank Freniere Member Posts: 214 |
![]() ![]() The very same! |

![]() ![]() I just went to see John play last night with Tennessee Tradition at the Landslide Saloon. He was playing his Emmons… It sounded great! He just installed a B to Bb knee lever and put it to good use. He also sang a half dozen old standards! db P.S. John Herald's lady fiddle player is Caroline Dutton. I told her she should change her name to Stefanie Grapel... She didn't think it too funny. [This message was edited by db on 12 February 2000 at 01:04 PM.] |

Oh... and John Swain will be at the Bethlehem Pedal Steel Guiatr Jam on Sunday May 7th. Check it out on the Events Forum. [This message was edited by db on 16 March 2000 at 09:48 PM.] |

![]() ![]() John Brabant, did you used to play in a group called Swampwater in the early 70s? If so, I believe I met you several times in NYC and, perhaps, LA. I was the tall guy with the beard who played guitar and later pedal steel (at that time an Emmons S-10) for the late Bill "Oliver" Swofford, of "Jean" and "Good Morning Starshine" fame. I think we played at the Bitter End and ran into you guys. Gib Guilbeau too? If I am wrong, chalk it up to too many years and too many motels ... Chris |

![]() ![]() Chris Brooks, wasn't me. I only picked up the steel circa 1979 and never played with a band until moving to VT in 1987. So you played with Bill "Oliver" Swofford, of "Jean" and "Good Morning Starshine" fame? Was wondering what happened to that guy, I really liked what he did. Didn't know he passed on, when was that and how did that happen? |

![]() ![]() John, I just want to thank you for mentioning my name again, as a steel player worth listening too.I think I'll have to get up off my lazy duff, and start to play out again. OOH!! Can't wait to start carrying all this heavy stuff !! Thanks Again, John De Maille |

![]() ![]() db, Larry's main gig has been with Bob Dylan for the last coupla years. He was playing guitar until six months or so when Bucky Baxter left the band. Larry then started playing steel and they brought in a new guitar player. I know he's still pretty active around the NYC area when he's off the road, though. |

![]() ![]() I finally called last week... got his machine. I haven't seen him in many years. Back then he was quite the talented multi-instrumentalist. It would be a thrill to see him play again. [This message was edited by db on 29 March 2000 at 10:06 PM.] |

![]() ![]() This is the string that refuses to die. John DeMaille, get out there and do what you do so well! Larry Campbell, multiinstrumentalist, yeah! Let's see, I've seen him play banjo, fiddle, mandolin, pedal steel, acoustic and electric guitar, and he's been credited as playing dobro on a Lucy Kaplansky album I have. And he plays the steel superbly, real innovative. You guys who know him should try talking him into going to St. Louis this Labor Day weekend and tell him to tote along his steel. Maybe we can get Larry to jam in one of those jam rooms.. |
