Does Anybody know who played steel on all that redneck David Allan Coe stuff like "You Never Call Me By My Name," "Longhaired Redneck" and "Jack Daniel's, If You Please"? Thanks folks!

Pete Drake played on "I Never Even Called You By Your Name" as well as alot of his early stuff. I believe Jim Vest probably played on the "Ride".

I heard a bunch of David Allan Coe coming from a jukebox in a bar I was playing at a few weeks ago. It was some sort of greatest all time country hits played by Coe. The steel player was tearing it up ! Every tune had a super fast wild ride in it. It sounded like a relativly current recording.
Anybody know who was playing on that CD ?

Pete Drake played on a lot of the earlier stuff - as I recall Lloyd Green played on some as well.

One album, the name of which escapes me right now, has a version of "Thirty-third of August" (a Mickey Newbury tune I think)that has some fantastic Pete Drake work on it - just the rawest, in your face, most emotional playing you will hear anywhere. Some dark playing for a dark sound. Man o man, you gotta hear it! What an artist Pete Drake was!

The steel player on the CD I heard had a very different style than Pete Drake.

I may have to go back to that bar with a bunch of quarters and figure it out.

Thanks for the input gentlemen. Now I'll have to do some Pete Drake research. Who else has he played with?

Scooter, that list is too long. All through the late 50's 60's 70's Pete Drake was one of the most recorded steel players. The Nashville guys can really give you the facts on this one.

"Diamond"Jim Richmond played with David and did pleanty of recordings on both Pedal Steel and Dobro. Don't know exactly which ones Jim recorded because I'm not David Allen Coe fan; but I'm a large Jim Richmond fan and he is a very good friend and musician.

Diamond Jim was the steeler on "David Allen Coe Rides Again" and I believe did some of it on "Long Haired Redneck". The Tennessee Hat Band was one of my favorite bands of all time. I saw them with DAC in 1974 and they blew my mind. Years later I became friends with Diamond Jim and the guys in the band. Great guys and a great band.

I always thought Fred "Mad Dog" Spears did a lot of the steel and dobro playing on the "Long Haired Redneck," and " Rides Again," albums. Anyone else know anything about Fred?

Steve -

Did you see DAC down in the Village? Maybe we were at the same show! It was either at The Bottom Line or The Other End, thought it was Spring '75.

Went on a Friday night. DAC opened the show with 15 minutes of magic tricks! Then did a quick medley (I hadn't heard "Rides Again" yet, still grooving on Pete Drake's licks on "When She's Got Me Where She Wants Me"). Never heard anyone swear so fast or so funny since. First time I ever heard "If That Ain't Country..." Which is indeed THE perfect country song, with apologies to "You Never Even Called Me..."

I was so blown away I came back on Saturday with ALL my friends & they loved him, too. DAC called Dickie Betts out of the audience that night to jam.

Them's was wild times...

I've got a DAC greatest hits somewhere and Buddy is on some of them, too. Along with Pete Drake and Lloyd Green. I'll have to relisten to it to be sure what tunes he's on, though.

There was an great album "Tattoo".I had an 8 track of it. Great steel by Pete Drake I think. I especially liked his "If You'll Just Hold The Ladder Baby, I'll Climb To The Top". It was more of a straight 8 feel than the George Jones version. Very mainstream country unlike most of his outlaw stuff.

I am a big DAC fan. Bob H, the steel player on the all-time country hits album is, believe it or not, Bobbe Seymour. Diamond Jim was the steeler in the Tennesse Hat Band. They backed Coe in his early career. Frank F, Lloyd Green is on When Shes Got Me, Where she Wants Me.When David dropped the Tennesee Hat Band, Dale "Oldest Son" Siegfried went to work with him. He worked on his stuff in the late 70's-early 80's. Check out his ride on Little Orphan Annie. Really Cool. On that Tattoo album, David lists the guests on the album under each song and on If You Just Hold the Ladder, Pete Drake's ride is so beautiful, he listed as a special guest, even though he plays the whole album. David doesn't carry steel hardly anymore and I wish he did because he has a lot of great steel on his albums.
