I recall reading some posts about steel guitar in music other than country. I heard
Joe Cockers version of " she came in through
the bathroom window" the old Beatles song. It sounded like steel playing the fills, I thought it was refreshing to hear this, as this topic has been discussed on this forum.
maybe someone knows more about this particular song and can add some interesting details. I had never heard this version before until today.

It's been a while since I heard that one, but I always thought it was just slide guitar with a little distortion added!

I remember this song and it does seem to me that there were steel fills in it. Check this one out-Brian McNight the R&B singer who wrote Back at One the same tune Mark Wills covered has a cut on his back at one cd which features prominent steel. Man was I surprised! The song is called 6,8,12 and the player is Greg Leisz. I love hard core country, but steel in a current R&B song-that's cool! Tom

Hey Donny now you got me thinking. I think maybe that was distorted slide. Now I have to try and find my old vinyl copy of that. That should be a challenge. Tom

You folks might be right about the slide,
I only heard it once, there was one lick that had PSG characteristics, and sounded like they put an effect on it in the studio.
thanks for the replies.

Sneaky Pete played on some of Joe Cocker's very early records.

EB,is on the ball, it was indeed Mr. Kleinow who played steel on some of Joe's early albums. not his first as that was cut in the U.K with Albert Lee and the like.
His 1970 album has the track you're thinking of, it was cut in LA in 1969, Joe was on A&M records as were the Flying Burrito Brothers.
The A&M soundstage in Hollywood was a bit of a meeting place in '69, Leon Russell usedto work their and was cutting his debut album for A&M the same time, he also played on the FBB's non album '69 single the 'Train Song', with Sneaky etc.
It was at that same soundstage in early 1970, that they rehearsed the 'Mad Dogs' tour band and every picker, drummer and singer between gigs came down and played.
I mean the group had three drummers!!!

I always liked that solo, probably 1% of those who heard it knew that it was a pedal steel.

Sneeky Pete has an impressive list of the people he played PSG for at http://www.sneakypetekleinow.com/
Everyone from Tom Jones to Frank Zappa!

Also Yoko Ono! (My PSG sounds like her when I'm putting on new strings.)
