I'm with KD's although I might argue that Ralph Mooney was really taking off at the end of the decade and just scrapes in as compared to say Vance Terry or Herb Remington. then again Herb was fairly inactive in the latter half of the decade, so yeah why not Ralph!

Speedy West is my fave for the 1950's though.

Hi Forum Members,

Steel Players of the 50's? Oh that isn't so hard to do. Here's my favorites from the 50's and I still dig them today!!!!!!

1) Speedy West ( My friend and neighbor)
2) Jerry Byrd (Manu, Big Bird!)
3) LIttle Roy (Tingling Mr. Steel man!)
4) Don Helms (Shag, as Hank called him!)
5) Joaquin Murphy (Oklahoma Stomp!)
6) Noel Boggs (Playing all types of music.)
7) Herb Remington ( Herbie Boy)
8) Leon McAuliffe ( Take it away Leon!)
9) Bud Issacs ( Pedals man, Pedals!)
10) Buddy Emmons (Buddy Boy are you awake? Yes sir Mr. E.T.!)

Speedy and Jerry fit the top though. I got every album they ever did and the guys were top of the heap! Speedy, I have known since I was a kid and use to run hang out at his Mama's house when he came home. We were raised in the same area, about 20 miles apart. I am so glad they re-released all of his steel recordings with Jimmy Bryant on CDs. Check them out if you don't have them, get them!

God Bless You All and Speedy!

Terry J. Wood

Don Helms and the "Small Roy" definately should be included in the top 10 as much so as any on my list. They paid their dues and earned that position as much as any others in that time period. Billy Bowman, Vance Terry, Lefty Nason, Al Petty and Reece Anderson should also be included. I guess I'll have to pull my shoes of so I can count higher than 10.

DVA...I agree with you on Johnny Seibert. Everybody during that time period had a style that you could definately identify them with.

When you asked for topl 10 players of the 50's, if it was 1950, Buddy and Reece were about 14 years old, no doubt they were good then too. I would say that Jerry Byrd, Herb Remington, Speedy West, Alvino Rey,Paul Martin, one or two fine Hawaiian Players,Norm English,Jay Harlan, and no doubt a few more than I can remember...al

Does anyone know if Bob Dunn was still playing in the '50's? He died in 1971. He was my first hero in the 1940's and can't remember if he kept playing after that. I believe he could be added to the list of greats that were already mentioned.

Any old timers out there would remember?

Milton:

Bob Dunn recorded with Cliff Bruner's band in Houston in August 1949. As far as I can find out, these were his final recordings. Unfortunately.

If you don't have it, get the Cliff Bruner boxed set of 5 cds on Bear Family 15932.
The box contains 117 recordings representing Cliff's career output from 1937 to 1950, with Dunn, Deacon Anderson, and others running hog wild on lap steel. Dunn is on at least half of the tracks. Papa Link Davis in there too, doubling on sax and fiddle as only he could.
