i was just listening to "the Essential Ray Price" and came across the song"Heart Over Mind".

Is that you Buddy? I'm still chuckling at the creative little single-string turnaround and man there is some serious harmonics going on in that song.

That is a great example of how much was accomplished with so few toys. Great stuff!!

On the original record ,done by Mel Tillis, the player was Walter Haynes. Mel Tillis wrote the song. Terry Bethel has played steel for Mel Tillis over 30 years. Terry told me Walter Haynes was the player on that record when Tillis first recored it.

Randy,

This is a great song and I love both Ray's and Mel's versions. I think Vern is right with Jimmy Day on Ray's version which dates back to 1960 I think. I've often wondered who is doing the great vocal harmony on the Ray Price version. Is it Ray double-tracking himself or is it possibly Johnny Bush? Vern, do you know?

Keep on pickin'!
Glenn

If I'm not mistaken,I believe I heard Eddie Stubbs say on his show one night that it was Johnny Paycheck. And as we all know, Eddie knows his stuff. Jason

Hi Mike. We'll get together one of these days won't we. Just Let me know.

Vern, I think you might be right. I saw Van singing with him on one of those old "Opry" shows and it is the same sound. Darrell McCall had a similar sound to that also. I'll bet sombody knows.

Jason, Janice and Vern: Thanks for the info on Ray's mystery harmony vocalist. This forum is wonderful, isn't it!

Mike: is the Nashville North you've refered to, in Wooddale or Bensenville, IL? If so, do Archie and Marlene still run it? (I used to get a "bang" out of Marlene's illuminated earrings (I think they were miniature lighthouses or something.... )

Keep on pickin'!

re Van Howard:
I'll muddy the waters a little bit. I think Van quit the business around 1958. I think Roger Miller joined Ray about that time and probably did some vocals w/Ray. Later on Darrell McCall and others.

Glenn -

Nashville North in Bensenville has been closed for about two years now.

Lake 'n Park in Palos Hills: also dead.

The only honky tonks I can think of are in the SW suburbs of Chicago: A&J Lounge in Summit & the Pinto Lounge in Tinley Park.

Sad but true.

Ray,I was trying to think what year Van Howard quit the busines,I was thinking it was closer to 60,Although it's posible he may have done some sessions later,I know Charlie Harris, did,At least that's what he said,We were working together and he took a few days off to do a session with Price,But Price had so many great singers it's hard to tell,He might not remember.

the usually accurate notes to the ray price bear family boxed set list this personnel for ray's recording of "heart over mind"

recorded jan 12, 1961, with:

jimmy day, steel
harold bradley, electic gtr
johnny paycheck, guitar
pete wade, guitar
tommy jackson, fiddle
joe zinkan, bass
shorty lavender, guitar
steve bess, drums
pig robbins, piano

i never knew shorty played guitar, but that is what it says.

van howard's last recordings with ray were in feb 1958, on a session that produced "i'm tired", "wondering","please don't leave me", and "talk to your heart".

johnny paycheck first appears on july 11, 1960, on a session that includes "i wish i could fall in love today".

willie nelson first appears on june 12, 1961.

darrell mccall first appears on january 7, 1962.

buddy emmons first appears on sept 26, 1962.

charlie harris and johnny bush first appear on feb 6, 1964.

OK, here's another one---"If She Could See Me Now" from the "Night Life" album---the credits don't name anyone as a harmony singer, and Johnny Bush isn't among the listed personnel, but it sure sounds like him; anybody know?
