I've always been partial to "Every Fool Has a Rainbow". Also, I love his version of "Cherokee Maiden".

Wow guys,What a hard question, almost all Merle Haggard songs are great, especially the early ones,I shall try to make a decision:
An outtake from The Figthing side of m Album
has been;" I can't stop loving you" which they only released on a Cdbox,Being a kid and from The Netherlands(not understanding English back then) I like the I "like Dixie
Blues" version of Okie from Muskogee(later I found out what it was all about, and I love " Mama's hungry eyes..I know there are a lot more to mention but life' s about making choices.Olaf

Glad to see most of us are having trouble settling on just ONE.

Phil, that one is titled “Don’t Just Lay There”. Judging solely from the title it could take a totally different tact than it does.

Good call Larry and Garry. I have forever wondered why “Shelly’s Winter Love” was never a single. I would go to number 1 instantly today – if you could just get 1 station to start playing it. Great tune.

And finally, Gregg is being modest not to respond to the mention of “You Take Me For Granted” on which he played lead guitar. Great job!

"Mama Tried", but only because that's what's playing RIGHT NOW on netradio.com

Favorite Hag song? You guys gotta be kidding. It can't be done.

Bob Shilling nailed it... it can't be done. The man's a genius, far beyond anyone else.

Even the few he sang that he didn't write he managed to make his own. I love "The Way I Am", a Sonny Throckmorton comp.

"I can almost see, that bobber dancin'.." - pure magic.

I have always loved "Colorado"--wonder why.

But it's hard tpo beat "That's the Way Love Goes".

But I guess they're all favorites.

I enjoy most of the songs Merle has recorded, especially the earlier ones. I particularly like "Ramblin' Fever", "Every Fool Has a Rainbow", "Mama Tried", and the Bob Wills type of tunes he recorded. "Cherokee Maiden" is outstanding. I think Merle got a lot of pickers in my generation interested in Bob Wills when he came out with that tribute album years ago. Of course he also recorded other tunes associated with a number of other earlier artists--Jimmy Rodgers and Lefty Frizzell to mention a couple of them. Merle seems to have a knack for cutting great songs and his style and ability are tremendous, a living legend.

"The Fugitive" for one. I am listening to it now (quietly) in the teacher's office. Love the subtle cowbell and shaker in the rhythm track.

Only one thing missing from the song ... (Hint: it has 10 strings and an accelerator pedal ... )

whats great about the old hag tunes is the honesty, they would really p-off some liberal social engineer, whose hell bent on being politically correct (remember Ronnie Reagan gave the Hag a governers pardon from the slammer in Ca., clinton only lets terrorist puerto ricans out to get the witch a few votes i9n n.y.)any way long live the hag and thank God we really don't have to pick just one song to listen to, but I really love it when the singer says "lets do the way I am"

the thing I like best of the Hag tunes is the honesty, the lyrics would really p-off a liberal social engineer whose hell bent on being politically correct (remember Ronnie Reagan gave the Hag a governers pardon from the slammer, clinton only does that for terrorist puerto ricans so the witch gets a few more n.y. votes)any way long live the hag and the guy really didn't use the steel as much as others may have in all those great songs, but thats the beauty part, his great taste. I still love it when the band does "the way I am"

Wow!! Two of my favorites have not been mentioned. I may have missed it though, this is a long thread.

"That's All In The Movies"
"Living With the Shades Pulled Down"

They are both on the same album which I own the orignal LP. I also think the "Someday We'll Look Back" album was a point where Hag's voice was the richest. I had the pleasure of seeing Hag live the first time they played "Everybody's Had the Blues" before the live recording. I also saw him in 1969 in Icard North Carolina. I've never been the same.

My favs are: California Cottonfields (Although this was written by Dallas Frazier...I believe); That's the way Love goes; Holding Things Together (I knew of someone who called this the "Elmer's Glue Song". Also, I believe Kenny Serrat wrote this one), The Fugitive, and finally one Merle co-wrote with Clint Black that I think is called "Dangling in my mind". Actually, it would be a little easier to pick the very few that don't do it for me.

Keep on pickin'!
Glenn

Respectfully, I have a correction. The name of the song mentioned in an earlier post is "Wake Up." The chorus goes "Wake up, don't just lay there, like cold granite stone - Wake up, we're too close to be alone."
My favorite Hag song has to be "Sing a Sad Song." That vocal yodel lick on the word "sadness" just kills me. But we know all of his stuff is great!!
