I've seen pictures of Bill Haley and the Comets with a Steel Player in the band, but have never heard any recordings with steel on it. Does anyone know where I can obtain recordings of Billy Haley with a steel guitar? I love his sound, and think it would be even better with a rockin' rollin' non-pedal steel....

I have a picture of an old 78 on Cowboy Records. The song is Candy Kisses (george Morgan) and the artist is listed:

Before Bill Haley's Comet years he performed with his band The Saddlemen, a typical Western/Hillbilly band of the '40's who worked constantly to pay their bills, picking up lots of experience and polish in the process. They were Pennsylvania-based and worked not only under their own name but as a well respected pick up band for performance and recording. The steel player's name was, if memory serves me correctly, Dickie Harris. If I'm incorrect I hope someone will set the record straight regarding this gentleman's proper name. Years ago I had a two LP set (German Bear Family pressing?) of Haley's music that featured many cuts with the steel up front. This is quite different from later recordings where you hardly hear the steel. A 1989 LP on the English Interstate label (cataloged sometimes as"Krazy Kat") has numerous cuts of Haley's band backing up a singer named Lou Graham. The album is"Long Gone Daddy" and it's dynamite!

The longest reiginng steel guitar player for Bill Haley was Billy Williamson.I beleive he passed away in 1969. Jeff, if you e-mail me with your address, I can put several of Bill's Essex label recordings on cassette tape for you. When Bill quit the Essex label and went over to Decca records you could hardly tell he had a steel in his band.He had a number of steel players before and after Billy Williamson. Merle Fritz,Lloyd Green,Nick Masters(Nastros)and Shorty Cook.If you go to www.rockabillyhall.com you can look up Billy Haley web sites. 73's...

Bill Haley was also part of a western music band years ago that toured the Northeast called the "Downhomers." Shorty Cook (mentioned in the above post)was part of the band along with "yodeling" Rusty Rogers, "fiddling" Slim Coxx, and one or two others whose names escape me. They did Sons of the Pioneers-type stuff, along with some comedy and novelty music. You might hear Haley with some steel guitar if you can find any old Downhomers stuff. Good luck.
