Anyone have a recommendation for a pedal steel teacher in the SF Bay area? Anyone know a player named David Phillips (played beautiful steel on a very offbeat record by a fellow named Stephen Yerkey)? I think Phillips is an SF area resident and wonder if he teaches any. And while we are at it, what kind of bar do I want to start learning with, and what's a good source for bars? Thanks in advance for any info on these critical questions!

The only teacher that I'm aware of is Duane "Pudgy" Wong at Music Works on San Pablo in El Cerrito. I'd strongly recommend that a beginner get some lessons before bad habits set in. David Phillips is an excellent and unique player who contributes to the forum from time to time. Hopefully he'll let you know of upcoming gigs.

Joe Goldmark lives in San Fran and is in the phone book. He can also be reached at "Amoeba Records & Tapes" in San Fran(not Oakland) where he manages the store. Check out his CD's. He is a great guy and heckuva steel player! Tell him Wayne from Denver sent ya!
