The CD is due out next Tuesday (4/25).
It should be worth checking out! Ben Keith's
steelin' is always top notch & tasteful stuff. If you've ever heard the old album
by "Hungry Chuck" (also with Amos Garrett
on guitar), you'll know what I mean.

Let's hope the record yields a big hit, with a video featuring Ben Keith that gets played a lot. That may help get the pedal steel guitar back into the limelight. Let's face it, the big upsurge in pedal steel came about in the seventies when it was a featured instrument in the popular Country Rock groups of the era. I'll bet a sizable portion of the players here on the forum started in that era as well.

Yess,
I'm a Neil-Young-fanatic and it's always like Christmas & Bithday at the same day if a new CD comes out. Ben Keith really is one of my favourites. The first time I noticed a PSG was a Neil-Young-CD with Ben playing.
Can't wait till Tuesday!!!

The pic of Ben at his Emmons w/ that old Epiphone amp on the back of Neil's Harvest Album turned me on to PSG...That picture alone was truly worth a thousand words, I knew it was gonna be good before I even listened to it...but for me, my Fav Neil record w/Ben is American Stars and Bars....I just wish it was on CD....my vinyl copy is shot from dragging those riffs over and over,

Fantastic! Ben Keith/Neil Young is exactly
why I've gotten into this too! I'm a Neil...
freak! Those guys have a long standing friendship-partnership. I've heard many tracks from the new CD and they are sweet.
I'm working on "Unknown Legend" from Harvest Moon to learn how to play stuff.... Listen to Freedom's "Crime In The City" for an example of how horns and pedal-steel (Keith) can mix
to form something huge.

Ben has played on nearly every N.Y. album on PSG and/or lap or dobro.
The "Old Ways" (ca. 1985) has some absolutely beautiful PSG by Ralph Mooney,
a shining example is "Once An Angel".
Ben has been increasingly picking up on producing Neil's albums since the untimely demise of David Briggs.
An excellent example of Ben's PSG artistry is on "The Deep Forbidden Lake", from the
"Decade" 3-CD set.
I attended an NY concert at the Greek Theatre in L.A. '84 featuring "The International Harvesters" backup band...Ben Keith, Spooner Oldham, Paul Drummond, Rufus Thibidoux, Anthony Crawford, et al. It was great country music, for sure.
Neil knows "Real Country" and is never shy to return to those roots for a dose of great tunes.

There's a web broadcast with music and NY interview about the new album, starting at Midnight this Saturday night (PDT), in realaudio and windows media player feeds at:

I heard some GREAT Ben Keith PSG & Lap work on the Neil Young Silver & Gold "webcast" last night. The songs with Ben were recorded live at the latest N.Y. Austin City Limits show, and a "Silver & Gold" DVD of the show is being released concurrently with the CD, (which features solo Acoustic Neil only), on vocal, guitar, harmonica, and that funky old pump organ.

One thing though...I think Ben's Pedal Steel must be a very sad guitar, judging by the way it cries, wails, and moans!

A most soulful picker Ben Keith is.

Funny thing--before I even knew what one was...the first guy I ever saw playing the pedal steel was Neil Young. He was in concert at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis...ca. 1972 or 3...he was playing "Southern Man".

Now, that's interesting! Never heard of Neil playing PSG!
But what's the matter of David Briggs? Does anyone have more exact information?

Believe It Or Not: Big Ben Keith is also the steel guitarist on Patsy Cline's "I Fall To Pieces," recorded in 1962.

Well....I like Ben Keith's work as much as anyone else, and what there is of it on the new Neil Young CD is certainly tasteful - but also in a style that you'd expect - meaning understated and sometimes a bit back in the mix. There could be more of it for my taste.

I've heard this CD compared to some of Young's earlier stuff - Harvest, etc., and unfortunately, I don't see it, myself. May take a few more times listening to it.

Martin, it's Ben Keith, not Neil on the PSG.
David Briggs died in the past few years.
Check the Silver & Gold DVD (Live Performance) Vs. the CD of the same name.
