What ever happened to Hoyt Axton that sang so many fantastic songs in the early seventies??
One in particular that`s been plaguing my mind for years is "She`s a Torpedo" that thankfully one of our Forumites came to the rescue with Tabbing out the licks and breaks off it for me - still don`t know who played steel on the recording though , all the other guys are listed but the "main man"
I must give credit to Donna Hannit for the Tab, as she did an extremely professional job for me.
Apparently she Tabbs out for forumites and charges $15.00 a throw, which is very reasonable for her time involvment, her e-mail address is: Donna4567@aol.com

Hoyt Axton passed away on October 26, 1999. The song "Torpedo" from the album "A Rusty Old Halo" might have featured Pete Grant on steel guitar. I couldn't find any confirmation either way.

I think of "Della and the Dealer" off of Rusty Old Halo as a classic.

Sad news about ole`Hoyt - he was an original unique singer-compiler that even now gets very little air play on Classic Country radio.
Still no verification re. his Steelie?

It's "Della and The Dealer" (and a dog named--what was that dog's name, Jake?--and a cat named Kalamazoo) remember? They left Tucson in a pickup truck, gonna make some dreams come true. Ol' Hoyt was quite the laid back singer and a fine songwriter. "Joy To The World" a la Three Dog Night of course was one of his, also some other good'uns--"Bony Fingers"--I guess he wrote that too. Mama Mae's little boy Hoyt.

I was fortunate to play on Hoyt's last recording sessions here in Nashville. One of the songs we did was a duet with Tommy Cash. I ran into Michael Curtis (who played bass on the session as well as some live gigs with Hoyt) at the Gene Clark tribute Wednesday and he told me he and Tommy are doing a compilation CD of previously unreleased Hoyt recordings. Don't know what label as yet, but Michael lives in Hendersonville if anyone out there wants to chase him down about it. Best, Boomer

Axton recorded four or five A & M LP's in the 70's. One of them "Life Machine" (Boney Fingers, When The Morning Comes) A & M SP 3604 (1974) is listed on Ralph Mooney's discography.

Hi Bob,

Hoyt had some great songs. He was defintely an original in all his music endeavors. I remember a song from one of his L.P.s from the 70's. It was a song titled "Evangelina," a song that I played with a group in the southwest. I loved that song.
This group I was playing with was really into different types of music. Everything from Country, Western Swing, to vintage Rock, Blues and even Big Band tunes. They were a Country Rock group and carried horns and everything.

I dug the Hoyt tune and another song I played with them was a tune they done by a regional artist. I can't remember his name ( A Texas Artist) but he only had a regional hit on the song 1980-1981. The funny thing is, about a year or two later another singer from the same region recorded the same song and it went all the way to the top. The song was titled "Amarillo by Morning,' and George Straight was the next guy to record the song.

I know that Pete Grant played on an album or two of Hoyt's. For example, that was him doing that fabulous work on Hoyt's version of "Honky Tonk Music", whichever album that was. Pete's been on the forum - you can find his e-mail address and ask him. If it wasn't him, he'll know who it was.

Hoyt also acted as producer for the final all original Commander Cody album "Tales from the Ozone" I have all the albums, and that was probbaly one of their best studio efforts. Came awfully close to their live sound, which no one else seemed able to do.
