I was flipping channels back and forth tonight and I caught part of a Sheryl Crow concert and the fellow playing steel did some great work on a song called If It Makes You Happy, anyone know who it was, and does she use a steel player all the time. She sure is a talented lady, buy not traditional country by any stretch of the immagination.

More than likely it was Greg Leisz. He has played w/ her for the past few years I think. In the early 90's there was a guy by the name of Bob Bottrell (sp)? that did some pedal steel work.

I know that Bruce Bouton did at least one gig with Sheryl Crow.

If memory serves me right, "All I Wanna Do" had a PSG on it. What part did the PSG do on "If It Makes You Happy"?

"All I Wanna Do" is the one I remember-the one where she sounds like Rickie Lee Jones. And it seemed like the steel was played by someone OTHER than a steel player...if you get my drift.Sounded like a pedal steel w/no pedals and some made up tuning. It was CERTAINLY not Greg Leisz-altho he may have played w/her more recently.I could imagine her really digging having a steel in her band because she's very hip musically.......for a chick. -MJ-

Bill Bottrell (spelling?), who produced that cd (the one with "All I wanna Do") is credited as with being a "budding steel guitarist" on that album .

The steel was audible all the way through but the outro was fantastic steel. The steel player had a Canadian winter highway haircut "BARE TO CENTRE BARE".The short while I watched, between periods of the hockey game,Sheryl played acoustic rythym, bass and piano I wish i could have seen it all.Someone also played dobro on one song but the cameraman didn't show who it was,it may have been the steel player as well.

Thanks for the input. Our band does "If It Makes You Happy" and I never recalled hearing a PSG. I'll have to give it another listen. Unless, of course, Sheryl only did it for the live show. Can you guys think of any other rock-type songs where I can sneak in the PSG?

In my opinion, you can put a steel in ALMOST ANY rock-type song.

We do "All I wanna do" and it appears to be all E9 , no pedals. The song opens on an A chord and I start the into by strumming strings 10 through 2 on fret 6 than sliding down to fret 5. Than it's up to fret 12 for the E than 8 for the C and 10 for the D. Very basic stuff going on there.
Hey RJP!!! Give me a call and i'll walk down the road and show you

I love to watch Sheryl when she sings. It looks as if she's biting her lower lip as she sings the word "fun". Very interesting to me. Does anyone know where the video was shot..the theatre and background?
