BobAnybody that missed Wayne Gailey missed one of the greats. I worked with Paul Harper and The Westerners when Wayne played Steel. Wayne started with Paul at about age 14 up until Wayne went to work for Kenny Vernon. That was many years, and most of his playing life. Wayne died too young!! When I worked with him Wayne played an 8-string Fender double-neck that he had modified by putting on chromatic stings himself. One of the chromatic strings was put on the high side to become the 1st string. The other chromatic string was put on the low side to become the 10th string. There was no pedals to the chromatics so instead Wayne used a finger to pull the outside (high) chromatic as many steelers still do sometimes. but... are you ready for a killer?? (Maybe you already know this). Wayne raised the low chromatic 10th string by pushing it with his thumb. He was a genius!!! One of my all-time favorite musician stories is about Wayne Gailey leaving Paul Harper to go to work for Kenny Vernon. If you'd like to hear it let me know. John Paul Jones

Wayne was one of those legendary guys that got me into steel in the first place...he & Don Buzzard ( another legend in the southwest) both seemed as if they were hearing things from some other planet. (or at least it sounded that way to me at the time)Junior Brown once told me a bizarre account of the circumstances of Waynes early death...to this day I wonder if they were true or not. Does anybody know of any tapes of Wayne floating around out there? flat 5, Rick S.

Wayne plays on the "Rose Maddox Sings Bluegrass" LP (1962). Rick S. I have a cassette of Wayne with Paul Harper's Westener's at the Roarin' 20's Club in Anchorage, AK in 1964. Forumite Perry Hansen dubbed me a copy. I'll make you a copy if you like.

Rick, When I played Steel for Rose Maddox I was a Tom Brumley fanatic and still am. I have had many discussions with Donnie Maddox her only son who played Bass and sang for her about the many players Rose had hired through the years and Donnie told me that Wayne was the absolute fastest player he ever heard and he said Waynes version of Orange Blossom Special was second to no one. You can hear some fine pickin by wayne on the bluegrass album titled "Rose Maddox sings Bluegrass" on Capitol Nashville # D112009. He is also on another Rose Maddox album titled Rose Maddox, "Reckless Love & Bold Adventure", Tacoma Records D1055. Take care Rick and good hunting. Bill Bailey Kingman AZ ------------------

Yep, you guys are right on target. I was rambling out in the southwest back in the early 70's landed a setdown gig in Alburqurgue and ran into Wayne Gailey and the Kenny Vernon band. I believe they booked into the Caravan East. When Wayne got through playing there were big balls of smoke comming off a Fender Steel. Awesome player for his time. Jim R

Hey Jim, Wayne was an awesome player for any time!Hey Bill Bailey, what time frame did you work for Rose Maddox? I worked for her brother Fred around '66 or so for a while. Did you ever meet a steel player named Lucky Rogers? He was pretty hot too as I recall. Hey John Paul (sounds like the Pope), are you the same guy who used to be around southern California for a while and hang out at Blackie's store ever now and then? If so, hello and it's good to see you on the Forum. ------------------ Have a good one! JH U-12

I had the pleasure of working the "other shift" at the Caravan East back in '76-'77 when Wayne was working with Nestor Eaton. He was one of the most unbelievable players I have ever seen. He played that old steel by feel because the pedals and knee levers had no positive stops. I would sit through both shifts just to here him play.

Wayne, I worked for Rose from 1977 to 79 or 80?? Rose's son Donnie played in my band in Carson City and Rose would use us for most of the road dates she had except for her Bluegrass festivals. It was the most challenging and rewarding experience of my past. I have heard the name Lucky but can't say I remember ever meeting him. Bill Bailey Kingman,AZ ------------------

I remember Wayne very well, we grew up together in Corona, CA. Lost contact with him and always wondered what happend to him. His first pedal guitar was a Multi-cord and he took the pedals and changer hardware off of that and put it on another guitar, can't remember the brand, but I think it was a tripple neck with his pedals on the middle neck, and Standel made him a special amp for his steel. He first started playing for Paul Harper down in National City (San Diego) at the old Westerner Club somewhere about 1959 or 1960. Did anyone ever hear him play Flint Hill Special? Talk about fast playing. Him and a guy named Gary Wilson also from Corona (who played guitar like Chet Ackins) use to go camp out in the desert for 2 or 3 days and take their guitars out and practice there. Also about 1960 he recorded a couple of songs he wrote, however he played them on an acoustic guitar and not a steel. One of them was named Yucatan (not quiet sure of the spelling) and don't remember the other one. I have an old tape I made off the TV when he was playing with Rose Maddox, and it was the first time he played the Flint Hill Special. I would be interested in knowing what happend to him. ------------------

Roy my understanding is that Wayne passed away several years ago. As far as to what caused his death I've never heard! By the way I worked a setdown job in Alburqurque. for about a year back in the early 70's called {Red Dog Dan's Saloon} down on San Mateo Ave. Thats Where I met Wayne and just wondered if any of you guys ever played there? I remember Al Unser used to come in nightly. The gig was a Saloon in one end a topless and bottomless joint in the other end. I remember I was always hard to find on our 15 minute break. Jim R

I was futunate enough to meet and hear Wayne Gailey play at the Golden Nuggett in Vegas many years ago while playing there with Charlie Louvin and his playing knocked me out. I still remember the ride he played on an old Rose Maddox tune called"Footprints In The Snow" Incredible! He sure left us much too young.. Neil------------------

Hi, Jason,Yes, I played with Blackie Taylor in Sammy Master's band in the early '70's. I played lead guitar then. Still do sometimes. I started with Sammy at the Holiday II in El Monte. Thumbs Carlisle was leaving the band and I was fortunate enough to get the job.

Ray , yes I remember Tony Douglas. My understanding is that they torn down the old Red dog Saloon. Wonder if the Caravan East still is in buisness in Alburqurque? They used to book some good country bands with steel. Jim R

If anyone has any recordings with Wayne on them, I'd like to know. Wayne was a cousin to Dale Sullivan, a friend of mine that drives a truck for Mid-America Cabinets in Gentry,Ar., where I work. I found one of Rose's albums with Wayne on it, at the Dallas show, and brought it back to Dale. He would like to get any of Wayne's recordings that are out there. If you have any, I would appreciate you letting me know! Thanks!!! Bob Dell BDell47@aol.com

Thanks John Paul, yeah I email Blackie a bit and he mentioned you had replaced ol' Thumbs, thanks for telling me.By the way, does anyone have a new email for Perry Hansen, who Ray cothren mentioned? After he moved State, he said he'd get back to me, but i had to change my email address. That was a while ago and when i tried to email him a couple of times, I kept getting them returned apparently due to the fact that he too has changed his email. Anyone? ------------------

I think it was 1995, I was in the backup band for Rose at a festival in Southern Oregon. I asked her about all the steel players she worked with over the years. She, without hesitation, said her favorite was Wayne. I'm sorry I never had the chance to hear/meet him. For that matter, I'm sorry I did'nt get to hang more with the late Mother Rose. She had a great way of sharing good memories.
