I am headed to the Branson area in about two weeks for my annual bass fishing and music trek. I hope to go see Tom Brumley again and was wondering if anyone can recommend some other good shows with steel guitar (of course). I'll be there from May 14th through the 26th. Thanks for any advice.

Tony-- I'm 99% sure these dates are right but at The Grand Palace Charlie Pride will be there the 10th, 17th and 25th--of May. Go see his steel player, Ronnie Miller. Also, Mel Tillis show has Terry Bethel playing steel. You may also want to e-mail Keith Hilton who lives there for some further info KLHilton@ aol.com have fun -- Bill Myrick

You might also check out the "Down Home Country" show at the 76 Mall. It's at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. Dean Holman, formerly with Tanya Tucker and Ricky Skaggs is working there. Don Reed is working with the "Presleys." He is also a fine player. Roger Blevins is with the "Baldknobbers." Joe McGuffee is at "Country Tonite." I think you would enjoy any of these guys.------------------ Bob Hempker

Hey Bob, are they any steel players in the two night clubs in town? I've been so busy Turkey Hunting and putting electronics in pedals, I have not been out. Sometimes some good steel players jam at a club called Beverly's. There is supposed to be a Hank Williams--act at the Aint Miss Behavin Club. Wonder if they are trying to do that without a steel? Wouldn't that be somethin? A Hank Williams imitator without steel? It wouldn't surprise me a bit. There are lots of shows around Branson with "CANNED" music. Yes, no band, just singing to tapes. Beware where you spend your money when you come to Branson. I know I am supposed to get you a pedal Bob. Terry Bethel of the Mel Tillis show is also waiting. Just had to go turkey hunting, and take a break from building foot pedals.------------------

Ronnie,Good to hear from you,and thanks so much for the compliment. I don't really deserve it, but I'll take it, anyway. Coming from you, that is a real honor. Sorry, but I'll be out of town this weekend. Roy is not working a single day in Branson, this year. We have been wearing out the road. Keith, I'm waiting patiently on that pedal. As far as the clubs around here, forget it. They want steel players to come set in for free, but when they hire a lead instrument, they hire keyboard players. As a result, I don't patronize any of the clubs, around here. I think maybe a couple places have utility guys doubling sporadically on steel, but they aren't even worth listening to. Isn't that great for the "Live Music Capitol of the World." This place is a completed joke. ------------------ Bob Hempker[This message was edited by dblnk on 04 May 2000 at 07:33 AM.]

No Rich, that name does not ring any bells. Thousands and thousands come to Branson every year looking for picking jobs. Only 2 or 3 land jobs, and they earn their money. When Ray Stevens was here, he just put out by word of mouth that he was looking for a guitar player. 369 guitar players showed up to try out. I know this for a fact, because we watched them. Imagine that! Didn't even put a ad in the paper ,or on radio ,or T.V., or anything. Just said, I need a guitar player, and 369 guitar players show up to try out for the job. By the way, Donnie Esienhower got the job. Ray Stevens is no longer in Branson. I lived in Branson before there were any shows. Music Shows in Branson only started around 30 years ago. My kin folks moved to Branson in 1840, before the Civil War. ------------------

Rich, I don't know of a single steel guitar player working on a regular basis in Springfield. I go to Springfield often, because my Mother and Sister live up there. Gary Wilson plays on Saturday night, at the Eagles, just south of Springfield. ------------------

Tony, I will recommend a good show for you to see, The Barbara Fairchild show at the Braschler Theatre Mon-Sat at 9:30 am. And I'm not just saying that because that where I play steel, dobro, and acoustic guitar, Barbara has a great show and she is a wonderful entertainer. If you are going to be here for several days, I hope you can stop by. Be sure and catch Tom Brumley, Dean Holman, and Terry Bethel, as well. Some other great steel pickers are Danny Yancey at Jennifer's, Bruce Hoffmann at Buck Trent's at the Dinner Bell and with Pierce Arrow at the 76 Mall, Don Reed at Presley's, and Roger Blevins at the Baldknobbers. Have a great time while you are here. Thanks, Michael T.
