Does anyone know where Jack Smith these days. Is he still playing. I heard jack in the early 70s with the Happy Goodman Family, Then later with Bill Anderson. I have a CD by Connie Smith live in Branson. Jack played steel on the CD it was some great country steel. He used the B a C pedals a lot. I play this CD all the time that how much I like his playing. Well, connie Smith is not bad to listen to either.Bob Drawbaugh MSA U12

Al, I got my copy from the Ernist Tubb record shop in Nashville. I was there a few weeks ago and they still had some. I don't have their number but if someone from the Nashville area would post it the record shop would ship you a copy. I think you would like it if you are a Connie Smith or Jack Smith fan.Bob Drawbaugh MSA U12[This message was edited by bob drawbaugh on 07 May 2000 at 03:04 PM.]

Jack Smith is one of my favorite steel players. Met him when the group that I play with and Connie Smith did a tour in Japan last October. Jack was kind enough to set down with me about 4 hours to give me his bio. Jack mentioned tha he was leaving Connie the first of the year(2000) to give more time to his business. He produces Christian Sound Tracks. The name of his company is Praise Hymn Productions. Jack lives in Nashville. He played with the Happy Goodmans from 1969-1974. Was with Bill Anderson and the Po Boys/Folks from 1974-1979, and then went with Connie Smith in 1987. In between these he toured with Johnny Paycheck, Ronnie Milsap and played on tons of Gospel Music sessions in Nashville. Enough cant be said about Jack Smith's steel playing. During sound check in Japan, Jack was messing around with the C6 neck and he played some incredible stuff. Sounded like a cross between Emmons and Chalker. When I asked him about the C6 neck later, he told me that he rarely has played it. If thats the case, I'd hate to hear him when he's practiced up on the C6. He played it better just goofin' off then I've heard it played in years. I often think of Jack Smith and who he has played with and wish that it would have been me in his footsteps. After all, he was at the forefront of Southern Gospel with the Goodmans, and featured on the Grand Ole Opry many years with Anderson and Smith. All this at the heyday of classic country music.

Duane, You said it a great steel player. I to would have like to have been in Jacks foot steps. He played with the best. Duane all the years I have know of Jack I don't think I have ever heard him play one note on the C6th. Is that not strange. Well it is good to know he is doing well and still out there working.Bob Drawbaugh MSA U12[This message was edited by bob drawbaugh on 07 May 2000 at 07:40 PM.]

By the way, when Jack Smith was with the Happy Goodmans, he played a purple double neck Sho~Bud. Rusty Goodman was friends with Shot Jackson and got the steel for Jack. Shot called the guitar "ole purple". Jack played that Sho~Bud the intire time he was with the Goodmans. When he went with Bill Anderson, he took Sonny Garrish's place and Bill wanted the steel to sond just like Garrish. Jack then went to an Emmons Guitar(that what Garrish played). Jack's been playing an Emmons ever since.

Bob, Jack is still playing with Connie. I guess she just sings too good to quit. He has a tape duplicating business in Nashville. Billy

Connie usually features Jack and calls him by name (ala E.T.) when she is on the Opry. I always wondered if they are related. Sounds as though they probably are not. Anyone know for sure? I was just curious.
