I was listening to Ricky Skaggs do Highway 40 Blues today and I was wondering who did the steel part in that song. That is a real moving tune and I have always liked it.

Unless I'm mistook that is Bruce Bouton. Also on the album are Weldon Myrick and Lloyd Green (that's Lloyd on "nothing Can Hurt You")
You are right--bravo, Bruce.

It was indeed Bruce Bouton playing his Emmons guitar! Also, how about his intro with Garth Brook's "Shameless"( a Billy Joel song) that knocks me out! My favorite thing Lloyd did for Ricky Skaggs was "You've Got a Lover". Buddy Emmons is incredible on Ricky's first country album "Sweet Temptation".

Bruce Bouton sells a talk tape for Highway 40 Blues. Has the intro, his backup and break on the song.

Thanks fellows I have wondered everytime I have heard the song and the album.I used to have it but it's like everything else, you put it where you won't lose it and then forget where that is. Ha There is for sure some tasty steel on that record.

John, check out the awesome faux-PSG Tele licks at the end of the lead guitar break, which segue it into the PSG solo!

I just got a CD with "Highway 40 Blues" on it, and I was wondering who the steeler was earlier today. Strange coincedence.

The CD also has the Grady Martin version of "Ghostriders in the Sky", with an explanation of the lyrics' meaning...narrated by Rex Allen Sr.

Grady absolutely shreds on lead guitar on it!

It also has a version of "House of Blue Lights" by Asleep at the Wheel, and a hard-swinging Ricky Van Shelton "Texas Swing" tune with OUTSTANDING pedal steel and hillbilly lead guitar (takeoff guitar?) playing on it.

The guitar player you're talking about on "Highway 40 Blues" is Ray Flacke.Like Albert Lee,Ray is an ex-patriate Englander. He's got a style of his own though. He uses no string benders,BTW-except his fingers.Great player. -MJ-

Hey Rich, what is the name of the CD? I would like to get a copy. I only had the song on tape. It sounds like it has some good stuff and fine pickers on it.

Kudos to Ray Flacke on "Highway 40 Blues". And while I thought the steel was Paul Franklin, it is definitely Bruce Bouton. Good job, Bruce.

Ray can be heard most recently on "Nashville Guitars" at www.the-record-store.com/nuancerecords.htm

Weldon also plays great steel on I Wouldn't Change You if I Could on the same album.
