![]() ![]() I was buying Spade Cooley and Hank Thompson CDs and heard steel on the overhead music system at Tower Records last saturday. I asked who it was and they said it was Sting's new CD! It wasn't bad steel playing and fit well with what he was doing. Anybody know who he was? Maybe there is a future for steel in multiple musical genres! |

![]() ![]() Wayne, I think that the pedal steel guitar has barely begun to see its potential in atypical music genres. Have you listened to Dan Tyack, or to Dave Ristrim cover Jeff Beck? (these are both available from b0b, BTW, at http://b0b.com/products/music.html). For me, this is one of the most exciting aspects of the instrument. It is so youthful, that outside of C&W, it is a largely undiscovered voice. I'll have to track down that Sting recording! Thanks for the tipoff. Cheers, Robert [This message was edited by ToneJunkie on 24 May 2000 at 03:51 PM.] |

![]() ![]() That is B J Cole on the pedal steel guitar on Sting's new album... "Brand New Day" Cut 8 "Fill Her Up", jazzy rock tune with country overtones.. also cut 9 "Ghost Story" maybe more, I havn't heard the whole album yet... but the steel sounds real good on it. later mike [This message was edited by Mike Dennis on 08 July 2000 at 05:08 PM.] |

![]() ![]() Sting did a concert in Ottawa last week. Unfortunately, no steel. It was at the Bluesfest, which was a different booking for Sting. I don't know how he thought you could book a blues gig in Ottawa with no steel.... go figure ![]() -John |

![]() ![]() Paul backed up Sting at the awards show, but I think it was BJ Cole on the record. Herb, that was a great quote! ![]() |

![]() ![]() Well, I'm a little late on this one. Heck, I'm even a big Sting fan. I really like his music and think he's very talented, but when I heard the title track, Brand New Day, it did not make me want to rush out and buy it. I still haven't bought it, but I did check it out from the Public Library. Uh...why was I telling you all this? Oh yeah! There's PSG on it! For those of you that haven't heard it, Fill Her Up starts off with a country sound for the first half, and then changes to more of a pop/world music feel, sans steel. Is Sting a closet twang fan, I wonder? Does anywone know if that's James Taylor's vocals on that tune too? He's in the credits, but it doesn't sound like him to me on that one. BJ Cole did a real nice job on I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying from the 1996 release, Mercury Falling. That's a great song! A Country artist also released it using Sting on back-up vocals. Looking at Sting's 1993 release, Ten Summoner's Tales, I see Paul Franklin credited with some playing. I'll have to listen to that one again. I don't remember hearing a steel. And it's Sunday morning, the coffee's on - what better time to do that! James |

![]() ![]() Ahhh, there he is, right on the second track, Love Is Stronger Than Justice. Cool! I forgot how much I liked this album! |
