Hi all,I moved to the Indianapolis area a year or so ago, and have had difficulty finding fellow musicians my age (20s-30s) to start or band, or heck, just to jam! My interests lie in country-rock (Byrds, Nesmith, Gram Parsons) and I have over 15 years of guitar playing under my belt (as well as bass guitar, some keys and some drumming). I have played steel for about 6 months now, and can pretty much follow along with about any song. If anyone around the Indy area would like to get together (or knows of a band that needs a steeler/guitarist), please let me know! Thanks, Joe

Joe was the first live steel player I ever saw, at the Nashville Country Club in Indy. He was playing a Marlen at the time. He worked with Norm Somebody and the District News around Indy back in the early 70's. Joe Jackson played guitar. I used to sit in with them at the Sherman Bar on Saturdays when thay had their jam session. I had to be home at midnight, though, because that's when The Wilburn Bros. show came on. :-)>C#

Is this the same Joe Tippie that played the WWVA Wheeling Jamboree back in the early 60's? Remember seeing him play one night in Jamestown, New York with an eight string lap Fender with legs. He had a homemade pedal with a chain pull on one string. Wow, could he play! Joe

Joe, When I am in your situation I go to bars and clubs early and always have my steel with me. I ask to sit in. Its a good idea to have business cards also. Just go out alot and see every band you can. If you like them and they don't have a steel player walk up,smile and tell them that they sure do need a steel player and hand them your card. (This system weeds out those perpetually reheasing bands that spend forever gearing up for that first gig.) have fun, Bob ------------------ Franklin D-10

I know Joe Tippie well. I have known him for 25 years. He is the same Joe who played the Wheeling Jamboree. He has a red Sho-Bud pro 11 and a Webb amp. He bought his Webb a long time ago after trying mine out. He is a super picker. He plays a lot at a big place in town called the 8 second saloon. I last saw him a month or two ago, when they opened the show for Merle Haggard there. The Norm someone mentioned was Norm Whitmer. He no longer sings at clubs around. Joe Jackson is a great lead guitar player I have also known for 30 years or so. He is playing in Nashiville In. at a place called the Red Barn, for Lloyd Wood. If anyone is ever in the area, they should check this show out. Lloyd is one of the finest singers and entertainers anywhere. You would enjoy the show a lot. The music will be great, with lots of steel from Jimmy Meisenheimer. He plays great also. Also the Sherman bar, is no longer a bar, and I believe the building is gone now. I played bass there from 1968 till sometime in 1970 with a young kid who now plays with a band called Exile. His name was Les Taylor. He started with us when he was 17 years old. Joe Tippie lives on a lake close to Terre Haute, called Raccoon lake. He golfs every day. He listens to steel some, but he is not involved in it like most of us. He just does it as a job and a way to make money. He also played for another kid in town who went on to become important in country music, by the name of Steve Wariner. Steve told him if he ever made it big he would take Joe with him, but I guess he forgot.
