I met Rex in SoCal in the early to mid '60's. Fine steel player and great person. Blackie Taylor thinks Rex moved to Oklahoma but doesn't recall hearing from him after that. Does anybody have a clue?

John Paul: Back in the 80's, Rex came back out to California, trying to see if there was any work. He stopped by Jack Laux's California Country Club in Ontario. He stayed about a week and then returned to Oklahoma City. I haven't seen or heard from him since then. This was in 1987. Jim Bob

Rex wired some pickups for me one time, for a Gibson 335. He wound them to 11,000 ohms resistance. They had a great, fat sound at low volume, but boy, if you cranked up the volume, talk about a ROAR. We then decided they might be just a shade too hot!

Hey JP,
In the 70's I moved to the North Texas, Southern Oklahoma area for a little while. I was working with 2 So.Cal. pickers, Bobby Ray & Buddy Banks. We were scouring the clubs in Oklahoma City one night and we went to this little place to watch the band. We were talking and Bobby said "Hey that guy looks just like Rex Endicott". Then we all said in unison "That is Rex Endicott". We shot the breeze for a while and he told us he'd moved back there and was really enjoying it. The thing I remember most about Rex is his precise intonation! His steel guitars were pretty but I always thought they lacked a little mechanically.

Hey Jim Bob, the first time I ever saw your boy Dave Knight play, he was playing an Endicott steel at the Shamrock on PCH.

Jerry: I had forgotten about that guitar. You're right, it lacked a little something, No a LOT of something mechanically.) But It sure had great pickups. Dave got a heck of a sound out of it, reminiscent of a ZB. I think Dave finally traded it for a Sho-Bud crossover in the Mid Seventies, and then went to Williams guitars. Nice to hear from you.

Thanks, Jerry
I'll never forget Rex's steels. I use to go over to his house and watch him build them, ...a drill press in the bedroom, ...a band saw in the living room, ...a belt sander in the kitchen, or something like that. Yep, Rex was quite a guy. I guess that's why I wondered about him.

Hey, you must have read my mind. This is spooky. My next "What Ever Happened To...___" was to be Dave Knight. So fill me in. Is he still around? Where, when, what, and how? I only met Dave twice but I was greatly impressed with his steel pickin'.

Jerry,

By the way. You said, "Hey Jim Bob, the first time I ever saw your boy Dave Knight play, he was playing an Endicott steel at the Shamrock on PCH".

Please explain, "...on PCH".

Thanx, John Paul

Hey John Paul,
I guess Al answered the PCH question?

Hey Jim Bob,
I'd also like to know what ever happened to Dave Knight? The last time I saw him was at Blackie's store in Orange when Herby Wallace was there and he was trying to trip Herbie up on some technical and theory questions but he couldn't. Herby had the answer to everything he asked! Is Dave still playing anywhere at all. I haven't heard anything about him for years. What a great player he was. I remember in the 60's he was playing at the Hitching Post in Gardena for a while and Johnny Davis was also in the band. Johnny had his steel set up also and they'd do some twin steel stuff and it was awesome! I never could believe how much music Johnny got out of that Fender 400. Tell Bobby B. hey for me and I'll talk to you later!
