I got a call today from Roger Sunesons Daughter, Susan, Asking me if I can make it down for the very last Jam Session this Sat. This is a store that sold Steels for over 50 yrs. I gave lessons there myself 67-74 Terry Bethel also taught there when He was playing in Minneapolis, prior to His Mel Tillis Days, The store is closing for good next week. Sunesons has been a Household name here, to anyone connected to music, and especially Steel Guitar, for at least 60 or more yrs. This leaves a real void for a place to get strings. picks, used steels, And a place to gather! We'll miss it! Best of Luck to Roger and Charlene Suneson in their much deserved Retirement! My Very Best! Al Udeen

Roger and Charlene have both been dear friends for more than 20 years. They are both first class people, and they owned a first class music store. I have great memories of playing seminars there.

Al, if you will please, tell them I send my best wishes for the many years to come in their retirement, and thank them for selling so many MSA guitars in the past.

As a regular member of the Saturday morning jams, I know that I will miss the fellowship among all the people who gather there. I will not be able to go this Saturday for the last jam. I am committed to another event, but I will make a visit late in the day, before they close.

Roger and Char are truly among the nicest people you will ever meet. When I first started hanging out there, I would hang back from taking part in any of the music that was going on, but the people were so friendly, they would encourage anyone who came in to pick up a guitar, and join in. It mattered not what you ability was, you were always welcomed.

I have learned a lot from hanging around these people. A lot of our local steel players will wander in from time to time and even though they don't have intentions of playing, they have the steel in the car, and they will eventually pull it out and sit in for a session.

The community will miss stores like Suneson's. The friendliness, the homeyness, the fellowship of fellow players, no matter the quality, and the free coffee and cookies that are always present.

I will be putting together a biography of Roger and Char in my next newsletter, and will post the text and pictures on my web site. Watch for an announcement about this in the next few weeks.

Thanks for a great time Roger and Char

Dennis

Jim! Actually the store has been for sale for about 2 yrs. 2or3 potential buyers turned out to be not so potential, The present buyers are going to use it as some type of ethnic business, and not a music store! Its in an older area thats undergoing some facelifting and upgrading! Boy! A lot of us will miss it! But nothing is forever in this business! I hope someone can put something similar together! Hi, Al
Thanks for letting us know about this. Roger, his wife, and the entire store personnel were fantastic to me when I lived in that area.

With e-commerce and major chains gobbling up entire regions (Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc.) it seems that it would be a tough time to be in the mom & pop music store business. I always struggle with the decision of whether to spend my very hard earned bucks with the local shop or save serious $$ with the chain or the online dealer. Tough call.
In this case it sounds like there's a lot more to it--a real institution. What a loss.

Hey Al...Thanks for letting me know about the store. As you know, I also taught there for a couple of years and will miss "Uncle" Rog and Char. I sure hope someone opens a store in the midwest area that carries pedal steels. I will try to be there Saturday and pick with ya'll. By the way, I remember Maurice Anderson's first seminar there. It was awesome! Sorry to see the place go!

I had a great time when I visited Roger's store last summer. Everyone was real friendly, and the coffee and cookies were free flowing. Give my regards to everyone there.

Hey Al,
We knew it was coming, now it's a done deal. I'm sorry I can't be there, out of town gig. But it sure has been a pleasure to have been a small part of the great history of Suneson's and the steel guitar and country music in the Twin Cities. I wish I had been here in the earlier years. We love those guys!! Thanks

When we visited Minneapolis (my wife's hometown), I'd always stop in at Sunesons to chat and see what they had on the floor. The folks there were always great to talk with and very friendly. I'll miss the opportunity of going there in future. Happy retirement!

Thanks to Dennis Atkins, I had the opportunity to visit Sunesons Music Store two years ago. I spent an afternoon trying out steel guitars and talking to some real nice folks who adore the steel music. I know that all good things must come to an end but I'm sure this place will be missed. All the best to Roger and Charlene! Regards Bob
