I have an opportunity to buy a used Peavey Austin 400 with two twelves...Everyone raves about 15" speakers with steels...anyone know about this amp? (I just bought my first steel and I'm playing it now through a Peavey Classic 50 or a Fender HotRod Delux, both of which sound OK---but I want The Sound) thanks

In my opinion, your biggest problem now with getting "the sound" is you don't have enough power in the two amps you have now. The difference between the 2x12 and the 15 is that you can keep the 2x12 under control a little more, it won't throw the sound as far. It is all opinion. Doesn't the Austin have a horn in it?------------------ The Young Steelkid

Two 12" speakers can sound better than one 15", as long as somebody else is carrying your gear for you.The amp with the horn in it is the Reno 400. One 15" speaker and a horn, marketed for acoustic guitar, and sounds good for steel too. You can have my Reno 400 for $200 if you pick it up here in southern California.

Eddie, you are right, the Austin has 2/12" scorpions and a piezo horn. I would not think it would have a good sound for the steel.

I have a Reno 400 that has the 15" Scorpion and the horn. It sounds great on acoustic guitar. I had a switch installed to cut the power to the horn when I use it on dobro because the horn made it sound a little too bright. I am considering installing a Black Widow in place of the Scorpion to double as a steel amp. If you go for the Austin you might consider putting a switch in to cut power to the horn.Rick

Wow, good information. Thanks, everyone. I think I'll pass on the Austin and keep looking. Thanks again.

Yes, I have owned an Austin 400 amplifier. My "guess" is that it would not be preferable for steel voicing, however I wasn't playing steel at the time of owning this amp. I think that the other Forumites pretty much nailed the answer for you. Hope that it helped in your decision making. Mike Brown Peavey Electronics Corporation
