Hey-Anybody have any info on Billy Hicks? He played in Newark NJ (at the "Wonderpool"-and other joints)in the 50's. Played a Gibson E-Harp (which I got from him-& I still have it!) Last I heard he moved to Florida. He passed on about 5 +/- years ago. I always thought he could really play fine. Of course that WAS in the 50's! +Thanks+ Lou

I remember Billy Hicks from the WAAT broadcasts in the '50's, when he played at the Wonderpool. He had the Jerry Byrd sound down to a "T". He was a good singer as well. I still have his 78 rpm recording of "Between Two Trees", on Acorn records (Billy Hicks and his Georgia Crackers) where he both sang and played steel. He influenced my desire to play steel. (As did Jody Carver, Jack Wayne, Roger Blevens, John Bonvillain, and other fine, but less reknown, steel players.) In 1955 I had the chance to play steel on the WAAT Coral Bar broadcast in Patterson, NJ. But it was a union job and I was a college student. Couldn't afford the dues at that time. The job only paid $12.00.Wonder what happened to Artie Payne. The first player I ever heard use pedals on the WAAT broadcasts in the late 50's. He was way ahead of his time. He had been a PSGA member and moved to Johnstown, PA, but haven't heard from him in years.

Lou,I was a friend of Billy Hicks,I was born and raised in Thomasville Georgia and Billy lived just around the corner from me when we were about 10 or 12 years old and had a live radio show every week day on our local radio station WPAX which is stiil on the air and owned by a very good friend of mine.I remember when Billy made the record "Under Two Trees".Then later he moved away to New Jersey if I recall correctly and I didn't hear from him for years.then one day he came back to Thomasville and he was playing steel guitar, and I mean playing,he was as you say Great.he could burn it up.I had just started on learning to play and was totally blown away with his expertise.I knew his father ,mother and sister they were fine people.I also swapped him my Fender Custom 3 neck steel guitar for his old Electro Harp because it had pedals on it and I was trying to get that sound.Billy later moved down south around Miami I think I never heard form him again, later someone told me that he had psssed away.Albert
