![]() ![]() Has anyone ever heard of this amp, or ever used one? A guy brought one of these amps into my store a few weeks back, and this thing is really awesome! 300 watts, and really big sound! Anyone else have any experience using one of these? |

![]() ![]() Danny! I had one of these several yrs ago, If I tell you how good it was, you'll want too much for it, They are very powerful, "500 watts", & very heavy"like a session 500!" How much can I buy it for? as I'm interested? Careful Now!,.,.Al Udeen |

![]() ![]() Didn't those amps have a closed-back speaker enclosure, with a removable back panel? Lee |
Tim Rowley Member Posts: 957 |
![]() ![]() Lee, yes they did have a removable back panel. There used to be a dealer in Lansing that sold Randalls (20 years ago?) and they were one monster of an amp for their time. I once heard a guitar man in a road band who used a volume pedal and played a lot of steel licks and he had him a Randall. It sounded awesome, big and throaty like a Webb. Danny, I just happen to have a spec sheet here on the Randall Steelman 500 and I'm going to quote the ad here for you: "This amplifier features the latest in engineering technique in that it employs new super IC's in the pre-amp section. These are the same IC's that are used in some of the most expensive studio mixing consoles selling for $50,000 or more. These IC's have outstanding characteristics, not the least of which are extremely low noise and high slew rate. Randall Steelman 500 features: 7.5 volts headroom (+20 DBM), 1 meg input impedance, active gain control, active bass and treble controls, separate active midrange control, remote reverb control, active reverb equalization lo & hi, 5 band active equalizer, effects in and out jacks, JBL K130 4 ohm 15" speaker, 200 watts RMS output, Low distortion .03% typical, removable center back panel for open or closed back sound, and removable casters." This spec sheet is from late 1979 or early 1980. Hope this is helpful information. Betcha they didn't sell too many of them though with Peavey's steel amps having become so universally popular at that point in time. Anybody else out there familiar with these amps or have some user experience? Tim R. |

![]() ![]() You'll see an ad or two for them in the old Steel Guitarist magazines. I never actually saw one anywhere, and I assumed that not many were ever made or sold - Peavey and to a lesser extent Webb seemed to flood the market about then. But I bet its a heck of an amp. |

![]() ![]() My friend and mentor, Dave Zeiglar has one. He loves it. He says that it is one of the best sounding amps (along with the Webb) he's ever used, and has been trouble free all the years he's had it. |

![]() ![]() Yea the Randall Steelman 500 is a great amp. I had the opportunity to try one out about 12 years ago at Sonnys Guitar Shop here in Columbus. The tone was great.I think the reverb even had an EQ on it. But I bought a Nashville 400 instead.I didn't want to spend $900.00 on it. but it would have been worth it. I just wonder if they still make those now? |

![]() ![]() Al: I know what you mean about this amp! I'm not too sure if I want to sell this one or not though, as it really is a unique amplifier. Tim: Thanks for the product info you posted on this amp. That was very helpful. Indeed, this amp really does pack a big punch, and it does sound great. The amp I have has a 15" JBL speaker in it, which was standard equipment for this amp, and you are right, it is heavy! When I get a chance, I'll put up a photo here of it. By the way, anyone happen to know where I might find a schematic for this amp? That would be a geat help to me. Thanks to everyone for all of your input here. It is very much appreciated. Danny |

![]() ![]() I saw one at Roy and Candy's music in Tulsa, around '71 or '72. I think the price was around $1000 and at the time I was making around $3.00 an hour. I wound up buying a Sunn amp for $150.00 and had to borrow the money to do that. BTW the Sunn was a tube amp, had 2 Standel 12" speakers and sounded great with a steel. |

![]() ![]() Hi Danny. Yea, along with the Webb, they have that great clean sound. Having that EQ besides the tone controls really helps for a whole heap of tones!I talked via mail with John LeMay about them and he said they were a good amp. They really have their own sound. I've had mine for a long time, just never use it. Got it during my "nused" gear phase. Though with all this talk, I think I might use it for the next alterative rock gig.......definetly loud enough! I don't know where, but if I come across someone who has a schematic, I'll send it to you.......Brian |

![]() The guy at this web site collects schematics for all kind of amps and pedals: http://www.nanaimo.ark.com/~pat/how.htm also, There’s an ad for this amp in an early 80s STEEL GUITARIST MAG. It’s the one with Paul Franklin on the cover. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() I have heard a couple of these amps. WOW !! Great tone, very powerful. The Reverb had a Hi and Lo control. I was traveling through Illinois two years ago and found a nice one for $200, but the 300ZX I was driving at the time was so full of stuff I couldn't fit it in. Thats how my luck usually runs. Have a great day! ------------------ |

![]() ![]() Joe: Thanks for the info on the schematics. I'll be sure to check this out. Much appreciated. |
