![]() ![]() I am posting this topic in highest regards of a fellow musician Bob White (the fiddle player).I knew Bob had moved from Houston to Colorado in the latter part of his career.Bob played on the Road Show of The Best Little Horehouse in Texas.Bob was one of the best musicians I have known, with his tone and technique he could make a fiddle section sound like violins. What a priveledge and pleasure to work with a musician like Bob.Let me tell you a (Bob White fiddle story)in the mid 1950's Hank Thompsons band played a job for the Nieman-Marcus department store in Dallas,Texas. One part of the job was for the band to play a song so the dancers in the store could model lingerie ,low and behold thet brought some sheet music up to the band to play it was taped from side to side to make a continous song it was about 10 or 12 feet wide,we all looked at each other with a stupid look on our faces, then Bob sez no problem so we figured out a rythm beat for it and two members of the band held each side tight with it fully extended out, then Bob walked along the sheet music to play the entire composition and the band followed as best we could. We dodged the bullet on that one,for they loved the music.Bob was our only musician who read music.I knew he had passed on,I found out later it was on the same day or in the same month as Hanks first wife Dorothy Thompson.WE were a close knit band and these are things you remember for a life time. ![]() ![]() Now thats what Id call a tough act to follow. Some of the guys I play with have a tough enough time getting the words read (myself included)unless theyre in pretty big print. |

![]() ![]() The Brazos Valley Boys were the number one band for 13 years in a row. That says it all. Jody. |

![]() ![]() I'll add my 2 cents worth. In my opinion the arrangements and musicianship of The Brazos Valley Boys is second to none. They played big band tunes that would have made Glenn Miller green with envy. Bob tell us about how the idea of putting Dubert Dobsons' trumpet in the fiddle section. Mike |

![]() ![]() I say unashamedly that a couple of tunes (Johnson Rag and Skater's Waltz) on my Texas Dance Time! CD were direct, almost note-for-note arrangements taken right from the Brazos Valley Boy's recordings. I love and honor that band. Enough to rip them off, in fact!! ![]() Incidentally, Buddy E copped arrangements on "Dardanella" and "Sunrise Serenade" from the BVB's as well. So I'm in good company! Bob: I sent you a tape last year, but if you e-mail me your address, I have a CD for ya. Pee Wee already got his. ------------------ [This message was edited by Herb Steiner on 04 August 2000 at 11:07 AM.] |
