![]() ![]() Hey Guy's, I got to see The Dixie Chicks and The Maines Brothers in concert Sunday night in Lubbock,Texas. Lloyd Maines was in top form. He played with his brothers and then played with the Dixie Chicks. Awesome. They had the Big Screen behind them and had some awesome camera shots flashing on the screen. I don't know how they got those shots but when Lloyd would take a lead or long fill it looked as good as an instructional video straight down on top of the fretboard. His right hand moved up and down like the needle on a Singer sewing machine. Great camera work and a top notch concert. The crowd got excited over the steel shots and that made my night big time. Adios, John Mullen SD10 |

![]() ![]() Wow, John, wish I was there! On the recording of that track, notice the lack of reverb or delay on Lloyd's work. Pure steel. Make's you think... That track should be required listening. I like the Chicksy Dix ( The gal that sings with my little group had this to say about the Chix; quote:Well, no comment on that from me... ![]() Another aside; When the Chix were on Leno, Jay said something like; "I understand your dad is playing a keyboard in the band tonight". Natalie quicky replied; "Yup, That's my daddy, and it's a PEDAL STEEL GUITAR!". You go girl! Lloyd is great on all their stuff, -Dave ------------------ [This message was edited by Dave Horch on 11 August 2000 at 09:46 PM.] |

![]() ![]() I've said it before, I'll say it again....there's no one quite as loyal as daddy's little girl! |

![]() ![]() Some of the songs off that album that didn't make the radio play lists are down right bar room kicking country. There is some of the best hard core steel playing that I've ever heard on that album. My two young daughters bought the CD, but I'll find myself stopping to listen in amazement. Bill |

![]() ![]() Daymon, Lloyd is great but he has also produced some really questionable "Texas singer songwriters" lately. Contrary to popular (Texas) belief, not every turd he polishes turns to gold. |

![]() steve, from his latest list of "turds" i enjoy listening to charlie robison as well as his brother bruce robison. they are both far from questionable tune smiths. their singing may leave something to be desired for some people. i myself have always attempted to find the place the lyrics are coming from. and i believe that lloyd does a good job of getting me there. i agree with you as far as not batting a thousand when it comes to the talent he has attempted to get out on the road but his steel work and ability to keep the melody in focus is the among the best around. i've sat and listened to him play hour after hour of straight up honky tonk steel and Lloyd, Junior Knight and the late Jimmy Day bring that soulful sound to my ears. ------------------ Daymon LaPoint |

![]() ![]() I heard Lloyd on a CD by Robert Earl Keene. Does he still play with the Keene band? |

![]() ![]() Lloyd pretty much has Carte Blanche to play with whomever, and whenever he wants with the Texas artists. His "main" gig (or project) currently is a young female songwriter Terri Hendrix. He has taken her under his wing and travels with her mostly playing Dobro and acoustic guitar. I will be doing a show with them this weekend in Red River, NM. He's been doing shows with Joe Ely, Terry Allen, REK and others. I have been fortunate to follow in his wake and play for a lot of the artists he produces. Steve B, you can't fault Lloyd for producing a "questionable Texas songwriter". They come to him with the cash and he makes them sound better than they really are. Writers like Chris Wall, Larry Joe Taylor, Charlie Robison come to Lloyd with the songs written, and know what they want the song to sound like. I can't say that about some others which Lloyd must literally help write the song or rearrange it so they don't sound alike. |

![]() ![]() I certainly meant no disrespect to Lloyd. He is a great musician & person. As a matter of fact, I have his Maines Brothers album right here, from 1980, and it sounds great. He could probably re-master it, and it would sound like it was just recorded last week. Making money playing & recording music is a good thing. I myself have even made money recording other peoples music that I didn't exactly like, and in some cases I would be down right embaressed if the stuff ever sees the light of day. My only point was that every CD you see that has Lloyds name on it might not be good music. Bad music / singing with great production is still bad music or singing. That is why I used the term "turd", as in "You can polish a turd all day long, and at the end of the day you still have a piece of $h!*". |

![]() ![]() I think Lloyd's work with Wayne Hancock is great. Also the new Hank Thompson. I've seen REK twice in the last two years and he never has a steel player with him, probably just down in Texas. As far as the chicks go, My three year old daughter loves them, she will always request them in the car.
