I was listening to the local Jazz Station in Newark, NJ W-BGO (WBGO.ORG) and heard an old R&B song by the Commodores (Sail On) and noticed a steel break in the song. Anybody know whom the player was. I checked Allmusic.com and they were very vague as to the musicians. This is kinda off the norm, but in the song the steel fit in well and was only there briefly, but fit the bill. Craig Stock (Tech Ex) Lubbock that is!

I always wanted to add this to our song list because of the steel, a cool crossover tune. JR------------------ Slide It On Over

My guess is Skunk Baxter or Dan Dougmore or Paul Franklin or John Hughey or Robie Turner.....it could be any one of those men. But someone on here should know the correct person

Craig, I happened to catch the Commodores late one night years ago on some 'late night show'. Lionel Ritchie was with them then, and they were doing this song. All of a sudden I heard a steel, but only part of the group was showing on the screen.....the steel was still there...they were starting to pan the group....they're all dressed in white suits...I'm still looking....and all of a sudden in the back of everyone was the steeler...a black steeler at that. I always liked Lionel Ritchie, and when I saw this all black group with a black steelplayer, I said...."well, whadda you know?" The steel is making more inroads. FWIW

Chip, thanks for the reply, haven't heard from you in while. I have the album, that the song is on, but for some lame reason, no credits are listed. Hope to see you in Norwalk CT in Nov, what a line-up. ------------------ Regards, Craig

I'd also like to know who that was. I know there is a small handful of black steel guitar players. There is also a small handful of white basketball players, so there you go.
