I'd Like to know who that player was . I think that is a great example of What A steel Guitar can Do for A Good Song.
My guess is it was Dan Dougmore or Paul Franklin. Does anyone know where Dan Dougmore is today and what he is up to???

I don't have the CD here, but I believe that the steel player was Skunk Baxter.

I looked this up and yes, Bill is right. I was thinking that I didn't know the group or the song but I found a clip, played it, and said "oh, THAT song". Never knew the title or the artist. Great use of steel in a blue-eyed soul song. You said it, Jeff--it really works.

I have the CD, it was Skunk Baxter. There are a couple of other songs on the album that he did a good job on too. Does anyone know whatever happened to Billy Vera?

Yes that was great use of the steel in the pop/r&b genre. I believe that record went very high in the billboard top 100 charts. I personally think steel works well with r&b as there are a lot of similarities in both styles. I only wish we could get more promenient steel work on records that chart as high as the above.
thanks

And, just in case the steel had "killed" the song, there was also a "pop mix" released with no steel whatsoever!

Billy and the Beaters used to play some regular club gig in LA when I was there (with Skunk). I never made it there (I was too busy). I always liked that song, and I think it was one of Skunk's best efforts on the steel.

Hey Jeff, in terms of Dan Dugmore, where have you been? Dan is certainly one of the top 5, probably in the top 3 session players in Nashville these days. For starters, he has played on everything that Martina McBride (and just about every other Linda Ronstadt wannabe) has recorded. He also plays a lot of slide these days.
