Steve,There are no shops in Denver, other than one guy on 10th& Broadway.Has a steel or two on a good day and not really a pleasant individual.Del Mullen is about an hour or so east of Denver on I-70.You could probably look him up.

Your best bet is really to contact Dick Meis. There are no shops in the Denver Metro area. Del does not have a storefront-all you'll see out there is a farm and a machine shop. And I don't believe it's a come on over anytime type situation. Dick has some steels at his house, some are for sale, but there's nothing here for a steeler looking for a place to hang. There's a very cool place in Arvada that has VERY expensive Dobros, but that's about it. Not a good situation right now.

Del Mullen is now located in Flagler, Co. check out the Mullen web site. I saw the new Mullen that he delivered to Junior Knight at the convention in St Louis and it is a real beauty. I also got to hear Del play on Saturday morning, not only does he build a fine guitar but he also does a fine job of playing one.

The responses from other Denverites confirms my recent experience. In a word, zippo.

Quite a change from a few years ago when Don Edwards had his store with Rusty Young, Ronnie Miller and the likes hanging around. We had the Zanzabar, the Four Seasons, Club Corners Ollie's Roundup and several Golden spots all very active with country music.

I remember sometime in the late 70's when Jeff Newman brought his seminar to town and packed a hotel conference room with students. (I can also remember the hotel bar opened at 11AM and had a pretty brisk morning right at the get-go)

Oh well...

What happened to the guy who ran the "Pro" steel shop in Elizabeth, Colorado, between Denver and Colorado Springs? He used to advertise in SGW and used to have a booth in St. Louis at the convention.

Hi Bob

That would be Britt Davis. I bought my 1st 2 steels from him-He's the guy who bought out Mack McConnell in the springs. But he moved it out to his farm and was dealing Mullens out of his barn loft, along with strings, bars, etc. Way out in the country in Elizabeth, and another appointment only experience. very fair guy, but hard to reach sometines, and he's not really doing much with it right now. Talked to him in February, and he didn't even really have any steels in at the moment.

Nice guy and knows his stuff, but he's not doing much now.

There are several great steels out there, but if you're in the area, you really should check out the Mullen. Looks and sounds beautiful! Just my two cents.

I started taking lessons on a regular 6 string guitar at a place in Lakewood about 20 years ago. It was on the corner of Colfax and Kipling. They had dozens of steels on the floor and also gave lessons. I had no clue what the pedal steel was at the time but remember checking them out while waiting for my guitar lesson. I would love to know the story on this place now that I play steel and if anyone remembers who was giving the steel lessons at the time. I can still picture the teacher and this cute red haired girl who had her steel lesson at the same time I had my guitar lesson. I've been back since but they haven't had steels in there in years. That was one of the first places I went once I started to play, but no luck.

Hey Memphisslim,
You're thinking of Guitar City, located in Lakewood. What a great place for steel guitar! The shop had a T shirt with a logo of Beethoven sitting behind a steel guitar. Unfortunately, the music store burnt down. I remember seeing some of the barbecued steels on display that the owner, Mike Russo, was able to salvage. After the fire, the shop was rebuilt, but it was never the same. I taught there in the early l980s, right after Jerry (forgot his last name) moved to California. On the door of the studio room was the name Rusty Young, who had taught there in the l970s. It was a great place for steel guitars. I still miss it.
Hello Skip-thanks for the compliments. I hope I get a chance to hang out with you at the Dallas steel show this year. Hope you're doing well.
Chuck

I went out to Britt Davis' place last time I was in Denver. It's a fun little shop though without a lotta stock. Just be sure to get a good map and pack a lunch if you're going out there. It's a looooooong drive from town.
