![]() ![]() This post is on the issue of whether or not Boggs actually played a pedal steel. Chicago's Bloodshot Records 'Bloodshot Revival and Soundies' reissue label had a promo for the never-before released recordings of Hank Penny as "Crazy Rhythm " Release Date: July 18, 2000. Now this could be a simple mistake to have listed Boggs as a pedal steel player, or was it? quote: While in the main text, mentions Mr Boggs working with Hank Penny in 1939, 1945 and then later on his transcriptions and some sides cut in 1950-1951. Now as Smiley Roberts pointed out to me, on Boggs late 1950s "Magic Steel Guitar",Shasta Records album # SH-LP-503. Noel Boggs has a 4 neck Fender on the cover. The question is....does anyone know whether Noel Boggs switched to a Bigsby pedal steel {or any kind of pedal steel} in the late 1940s and early 1950s. If he did it's my guess he wasn't entirely happy and reverted to Fender non pedal steels.

![]() ![]() Noel owned a Bigsby at one time. It's now owned by a musician in Arkansas. I saw Noel about a year before he died, playing at a private party in Hollywood with Hal Southern's band. He was playing a Fender 1000 standing up with no pedals. This was about 1972. He was still with Jimmy Wakely, and also played in Doye O'Dell's band at the Mustang Club on Alvarado St. downtown. I would occasionally fill in for him with Doye. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() Thanks guys, I guess it was a case of Noel Boggs trying the pedal set-up and then returning to the mutli-neck steels. Herb..is there any Californian honky tonks or groups that you didn't sit in with?...seriously! {LOL} |

![]() ![]() Jason What I did was not all that exceptional. Jay Dee, Johnny Davis, Dave Ziegler, Sneaky, Red, Al Vescovo, Jerry Stephenson, Rex Endicott, Blackie Taylor, Gene Fields, Al Petty, Carl West, Carl Walden, Thad Maxwell, James O'Rafferty, yours truly, and etc. etc. etc.... all of us played all over Southern California at that time and many "stars" were just playing one nighters with house bands in many clubs in the area. I just am online a lot, have a good memory of who I played for, and am quick with the keyboard. But there are many guys who stayed in CA after I left, like Jim Bob Sedgwick and Jerry Hayes, who have equally great stories about playing with guys that were the greats of yesteryear. It's no big whup, really. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() I know Herb, it wuz a little tongue in cheek, but just as much in awe as well. I respect all the guys you mentioned, geez Carl West played on some great sides, Red did some great stuff and it's really amazing to hear from guys like Jerry, Carl Walden, Ethan Reilly, John Noreen, Jay Dee and all the rest, admiitedly I have a soft spot for Californian pickers, but there are guys from all over the world who I admire that swing by the forum, some are famous {well by steel standards}, but to guys like me..it's kind of awe inspiring as well. |

![]() ![]() Jason- I saw Noel Boggs play in 1968 at Tom Bradshaw's first West Coast Pedal Steel show. In Napa valley Calif. I was teaching and playing in the Santa Rosa ,Ca area. I am pretty sure he was playing pedals, but my memory is not so good on that point. Tom Bradshaw would know.(How about it Tom?) Zane Beck, Chuck Wright, Vance Terry, and the Master, Maurice Anderson with his S12 Bb6 maj7 MSA was there and he knocked me out!....al |

![]() ![]() Hi Al, Is that when you took your 1941 Gibson Electra-Harp and ended up demonstrating it? Actually it's a good point, Tom would be one of the guys to email about this, I haven't seen him post for a while. |

![]() ![]() Al Marcus, I was in LA from '64 to '76. I wonder if you can recall the name of the steel player that performed occasionally with Mary Kaye, of the Mary Kaye Trio? I played guitar with her (before I got into steel) around 1967, did 2 weeks in Vegas, and therafter occasionally played at her nightclub in the Valley (Canoga Park, perhaps?). Mary was a terrific guitarist--used a DeAngelico--but for some reason she liked my playing. Now, one night she paired me up at the nightclub with an older guy who played a multi-necked Fender. He stood up while playing. This was my first experience with any kind of steel. Well, the two of us played "Perdido" and he was awesome! My memory (?) says his name was "Al" ... but I could be wrong (This WAS the 60s!) Any ideas as to the identity of this steel man? He was great, and really gracious to this young would-be jazz guitarist. BTW, you mentioned Thad Maxwell. What is he up to these days? Thanks, Chris ------------------ |

![]() ![]() Noel Boggs did own and play a Bigsby and I've never read or heard anything about him disliking the guitar. He did drag it into the studio for recording purposes (check out the Tommy Duncan recordings on Bear family label) but performed in public with any number of different Fender steel guitars. This was due to his endorsement contract with Fender. I know nothing of his involvement with pedal guitars and am as curious as the rest of you about this poorly documented aspect of his playing career. And don't hesitate to get that new Hank Penny CD; Noel's playing is full of enough fat chords to clog an artery |

![]() ![]() quote: Well it doesn't get better than that..well said Eric! Chris Brooks, someone told me not so long ago about Thad, but I'm not usre what the story was, it was a little vague. Thad also played in Tarantula and One Man's Family in the 1960s, the latter was kind of a pre Swampwater country rock thing with John Beland and some of the 'Spanky And Our Gang' crowd. |
