Date: Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000 Time: 5pm to 10pm CLub: Big River Club Location: Stockyards City/State: Fort Worth, TX Event: A Sunday evening of pure steel guitar heaven. Featuring: The phenomenal Gary "Carp" Carpenter. There is no way to describe Carp's picking. You just have to experience it. The four-piece band was great. It consisted of bass, drums, fiddle, and steel. For five hours I heard REAL traditional Country Music and Western Swing Music, with an occassional jazz tune featuring Carp on steel. Carp picked his a$$ off. So did the rest of the band. Everything they played was excellent. Carp gets as good a sound as I have ever heard and only uses an Emmons steel and a Nashville 400 amp. The only effects Carp used was the reverb in his amp. I guess you don't need a lot of effects if you play that good. It's no wonder Ricky Davis sings Carp's praises so much. The man is AWESOME. It makes a guy either want to take a hatchet to his own steel or work harder at getting better. Also, Carp is a great guy. He always has time to talk to anyone who wants to chat or ask questions or even for advice. So, if possibly, drive to Fort Worth some Sunday and see Carp. If you have to drive four hours to get there I guarantee you it'll be worth it. I'm sure you'll hear a lot more of Gary Carpenter. He just keeps getting better and better. Btw, tell him his buddy, John Paul Jones sent you. John Paul |

I agree 100%. Carp is one of the best steel players we have in Dallas/Ftworth area.He gets better every time I hear him play.He played steel on a tape I made several years ago,and he puts 100% in doing the best he can do. One of the best in the business, and a good friend. If you ever get a chance to see him, don't pass it up. Gene Brown |

I agree 100%. I had the pleasure of hearing Gary play at Big Balls in Fort Worth with Justin Trevino, and he is absolutely great. If you dont have his CD, you are missing a real treat. I have a couple of his teaching tapes and they are very well done also. I sure wish he would play at one of the Dallas steel shows so more people could enjoy his great talent. |

Carp is a GREAT PLAYER!!! But what makes him so great is his attitude! Both in music and life! He has no ego. He's the same now as he was 20 yrs ago! Very humble but will talk to you about music at the drop of a hat. NOBODY plays with more soul and feeling and love for the instrument than *Carp*!!! I know--I am honored to have been a friend of his for over 25 yrs. Thanks, Junior. ------------------ |

Carpenter is truly one of the best in the business! His CD is great and his talk and teach tapes are super. Besides that he's been a good friend and one of my main steel guitar resources for years. Send him an email for all carpsteel info |
