I recently saw the movie, "Almost Famous," a story about a rock band (Allman Brothers?) on the road in the early l970s. The movie is filled with great songs of that era. Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" was a featured tune, and, just like I remembered, the song is filled with melodic steel guitar. Does anyone out there know who was the steeler?

The man's had an amazing career, considering many steel players and rock fans alike don't have a clue who he is.

Funny you should mention this, Chuck. I just saw the movie on Monday night, and when that bus scene came on I looked at my girlfriend and said, "Man, I forgot that there was pedal steel in this song." Wasn't such a big deal to her, but I plan on picking up the album. Which album is that? (The Elton John album, of course, not the soundtrack.)

I think the album was "Madman Across the Water."

B.J. Cole is a major inspiration to me, and a tremendous, innovative steel guitar talent. Frankly, I'm at a loss why he seems to be so overlooked on the forum. Any thoughts?

Maybe it's cos he's English & doesn't play much country music.

I went to the above mentioned site to see if BJ was on any other Elton John records and did'nt find any other. Does anyone know who did the steel work on his Country Comfort album? It had one of my all time favorite solos on it.
thanks

That was BJ Cole on the album, but I played it live once with Elton John. It was a private party at the Palomino Club, and the house band was providing the music. Elton and band got up to play, and since they didn't have a steel player, I just kind of stayed up there. And no he didn't offer me a job.

THat's funny, I could have sworn that song was called 'Tony Danza'.

When I first heard song thought it was Red Rhodes after discovering his playing on Willis Alan Ramsey re-issue. I got to play steel with Elton when we did Miami special. I basically learned string section part and applied it to steel. Didn't get a job offer either.

Pete--Thanks for the album title.

Yeah, that Tumbleweed Connection album is great. One of my all time favorites. Country Comfort, Burn Down the Mission, My Father's Gun, Come Down in Time... Not a bad tune on the album.

As some of you may know,Desert Rose Band and Hellecaster's guitarist John Jorgenson has been playing with Elton lately and has been playing a pretty fair amount of pedal steel as well as sax on that gig. -MJ-

You might remember the Jerry Rafferty song "Right down the line". BJ also played on that. He's done alot of cool stuff with more modern artists, but check out his solo releases!

My old roomate used to run a courier service here in Atlanta and I'd help him out on my days off- once I delivered 26 pairs of shoes, all the same exact kind in three colors to Elton at his apartment here- he didn't offer me a job either...

Had the oppurtunity to play on a cut on Elton's latest cd (The Road To El Dorado). The steel goes through the whole song along with a lot of orchestration. Very lush sounding.
