Does anyone here know Russ Pahl?? He plays pedal steel and guitar. Used to be with a band called Great Plains. An excellent player. I need to ask him some questions about his gear and tone. If anyone knows where he can be reached by snail mail or email I'd really appreciate it.

I heard he is doing studio work right now.

If it's the same guy, he's origionally from the Twin Cities area and was playing with a group (Sky Blue Water Boys)I believe, however this was about 20 years ago.

Mark;

You probably are aware of this but he's on the new Allison Moorer CD - the Hardest Part - nice stuff, no pyrotechnics but great feel.

Thanks Greg. Last time I saw him was on tape from 1992 in a band called Great Plains. Excellent tone and chops one of the very best ever.

Last time I saw Russ (a coupla years ago), he was playing a stripped down LeGrande on which he'd pulled out the C6th neck, removed a coupla knee levers, and hard-wired his PenTad pickup to one of the voicings. He was using whatever amp was available at the time but often recording with just a SansAmp rack mount and a Quadraverb. I know he was hoping to pick up a ZB but I don't know if he ever did. He's a wonderful and 'under-appreciated' musician.

I have a video somewhere where I believe he is playing guitar and steel for Michael Johnson. I recorded it off of TNN, I believe the "New Country" series quite a while ago. Great player. (Jack Sunrood is playing bass, also).

Take care,

Les

I've known Russ for years. He was with The Sky Blue Water Boys in Minneapolis in the 70's. Then with Michael Johnson, Don Williams and Great Plains. The last I heard he was just doing sessions in Nashville.
Both Russ and Mike Cass gave lessons at Clem Schmitz's store, The Pedal Steel Guitar Emporium, in Minneapolis.
Russ is a great player. He cops any number of styles and does them all like he grew up playing just that style.

My best,
Ernie

Met Russ Pahl in Battery Studios on 19th Avenue in Nashville September 1999! He was doing a demo session for Bluewater Music with Hal Ketchum.
