Wowser, Jay Dee.. hey we haven't heard a lot from Jay Dee of late, what Cds/albums has he played on this year.

Jay Dee has been part of the Californian music scene since the 1960s and played with Eddy Drake's band at the Aces, club, then with Gene Davis and Norm Forrest before he hooked up with a fellow named Buck Owens who had some group named the Buckaroos.
(Jay Dee appears on two live Buck Owens albums from 1969 and one of the Buckaroos albums from 1969)
In 1970 he joined the Tony Booth Band at the Palomino club and not only played on some of Tony's excellent Capitol alums, but spent two and a half decades playing at the Pal' on and off with various groups, including Jerry Inman & The Palomino Riders.

Jay Dee also made some interesting inroads in the country rock scene as he was the steel player for Gram Parson's first country rock effort (the International Submarine Band)and played on the Byrds 1968 classic 'Sweetheart Of The Rodeo'album..now on CD with extra tracks from the sessions.

I had lunch with JD some months ago here in Nashville, and he was on his way to Atlanta with Randy Scruggs to do some overdubs on an Elton John project. I haven't spoken with him since. He's one of the greats on steel guitar. Best, Boomer

We have two excellent CDs by Jay Dee in the Forum catalog: Chris & Herb's "Bakersfield Bound" and Rose Maddox's "$35 and a Dream". As far as I know he's never made an instrumental album, but he put on a great show at the ISGC this year.

Jay Dee does post on the Forum from time to time, and he shows up at steel events in California when his busy recording schedule permits.

I believe I'm right with this. I think Jay Dee was also a member of the Desert Rose Band. Bob

Jay Dee also played on Eric Claptons major hit "Tears in Heaven". It was all over the radio and the steel was all through it. Lots of people that had never heard a pedal steel heard it there.

Hey Jeff, next time you mention a steel player being credited on an album, don't forget to mention the artist and the name of the album, you might get some cool info from someone on the Forum about the album, or alert the rest of us to one we don't know about.

Personally I'm always keeping an eye out for Jay Dee. He's done work for all sorts, like Barbara Streisand, Highway 101, Michael Nesmith's Countryside label, played with Ray Price, Ira Allen, Jimmy Snyder, Cliffie Stone, Rose Maddox and even done sessions for the opera/classical singer for some wacky late 1960s country albums (or at least one), what was her name..Mrs Smith??

Whoop I've been corrected via email, thanks Jack.
I meant Mrs Miller (not Smith).. and Jay Dee still sounds great!

Whenever anyone discusses JayDee, I always have to mention the Tony Booth album LOnesome 7-7203. At the time I first listened to it (back in the 70's. Egad!!), I wasn't into individual players, just appreciating what I heard, and I thought at the time that the playing was special. Now, 25 years later, after the Desert Rose Band, which has terrific steel work, and other works as well, the Tony Booth album still stands, IMO, as a definitive work by JayDee. These many years later, having heard many more records and CD's by many great players, it's even more impressive to me than it was then. Any fan of his should do what they can to get hold of that album. 'Nuff said.

Jeff: Jay Dee is a great player, and even more important, a super nice fellow. Why don't you do a search on the Forum and E-Mail him. I am sure he would return any E-mails he receives. I've known him since the 1960's. You won't find a nicer person in this business.

Jeff Lampert, What a terrific album "Lonesome 7" was, at least for a steeler. You could do a Ph D on intros and solos just from this one disc. Thanks for the reminder.
