Dear forumites,
I noticed a newcomer on this forum, my dear friend Andre Sommer!
Andre is a very well known European steeler, studiomusician and roadplayer, he is outstanding on Pedal-Steel, keyboard and guitar. He was a member of our famous UNITED STEELS OF EUROPE, together with Koos Biel, Jean Yves Lozach, Nils Tuxen and Gerry Hogan.
He's also Charley McCoy's roadplayer.
As far as I know, he is the only steeler in The Netherlands that can make a decent living with playing steelguitar in bands and in the studio.
Again, welcome, Andre!
(Now you buy me a beer, Andre? )
regards, Johan

Andre Sommer is a great steel player (and guitar player too!). I met Andre years ago in Bremerhaven, Germany and see him frequently when I go to Europe. He played for a while with Jennifer Weatherly (a great artist based in Geneva). Andre, it is good to see you here! Drop me a line and let me know how you are doing! Hope to see you this year when we come over.

Tommy

Welcome, Andre. I visit the Netherlands quite often and hope to meet you there sometime ... like in January or February, maybe!

Tot ziens,

Chris

Welcome Andre,
I will cherish the times we had while I was in The Netherlands on tour with South Mountain & Steeldays 2000, especially the night we went to see Albert Lee (with Gerry Hogan) on steel, etc.
You are one of a kind!
Best Wishes,
Al Brisco

Well what a nice surprise !! I just returned home from a small
tour, checked this forum and found this nice welcome message by Johan
Jansen. Thanks Johan, I really appreciate your kind words and we
definitely should get together soon, have that beer, and share a couple
of licks, OK ? I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you
for the excellent way you organized the Steeldays 2000, here in
Holland.I enjoyed it very much and I'm looking forward to the next one !

Hey Tommy " Sir Punchalot" Detamore !
Great to see your post here ! You have no idea how much stress I went
through trying to copy some of the licks you played on Jennifer's CD
when I got on the road with her. Especially the ones on "Roll on Santa
Fe" Unforgivable !!
But here's the good part I've always loved the C6 but unfortunately
I
never really took the time to explore it, just barely scratched the
surface. But by joining her band I knew I had to sit down, dig in, and
try to come close to what you did on her CD.
Thanks Tommy, because analyzing those recordings and hearing you perform
live as well, was and is a true inspiration.

BTW, I still have a videotape from that jamsession we did at Kurt's
place in Geneva.I should warn you that there are laws in Europe against
some of the stuff you played that night, too !

Hope all is well and we can meet again when you come back over. I will
e-mail you soon. Please give my best wishes to Clay Blaker and the rest
of the gang !
(oops, almost forgot...playing Zum steel now )

Hi CrowBear,Martin and Chris,
Thanks for welcoming me to this forum ! Hope we get to meet each other
in person someday,
'cause I see two of you are living in Europe and Chris is visiting
Holland often. BTW Chris, as you probably know, it can get quite cold
over here at that time of year so
I'll be in Thailand in January. Not only for a holiday but there's a
possibility to do some studiosessions and maybe a small tour. I'm really
interested in how the steelguitar is being used over there, although
during my last stay this past summer I didn't spot a single one

How about in the United Arab Emirates ? If you do come over to Holland
next year please let me know so we can meet.
CrowBar, have you heard of Jean Yves Lozac'h and Lionel Wendling ?
They are both great steelplayers from your country, and Jean-Yves was
also one of the founding members of United Steels of Europe.

Martin, I lived in Berlin for some months and played with Western Union.
I remember two steelplayers who where in this band before me, called
Andy Forstmann and Chris Lepp. I was wondering if you know them. In the
early '90's I also played a couple of years with a German country singer
called
Tom Astor. At that time he was very popular and I never realized until
then, how big country music in Germany was. We did several shows there
for up to 60.000 people. That would be impossible in Holland ! That's
half the population here

Hi Al !
I'm very pleased to see you on this forum as well and hope everything is
OK with you. It sure was a great pleasure to meet you and hear you play
with South Mountain. In the past, Steve Piticco and I discussed the
possibility to join their band and I was really honored that this super
guitarist asked me as their steel/keyboard player. It also meant I had to
move to Canada and I wasn't sure about giving up my work in Europe at
that time. So to see you play with them was very special to me and I
must say, you did an outstanding job ! Folks, if you who have a chance
to hear Al and Steve pick (and fiddle player Don Reed !) please don't
miss the opportunity.
I also enjoyed it a lot when you came along that night when Albert Lee
and Jerry played in Amsterdam. Besides being incredible musicians, they
are also two of the nicest people I've worked with.

BTW, I just received a message that South Mountain will be playing in
Europe around March next year, and I really hope we can see each other
again then. Please say hi from me to everyone in the band and keep in
touch with the Dutch !

Cheers,

André.
