Hi fellow steelers. I just found an old Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen album. On the early cuts (including their radio hits, "Lost in the Ozone" and "Hot Rod Lincoln"), it lists the steel player as West Virginia Creeper. For the later cuts, it lists Bobby Black as the steel. Anyone know the true identity of West Virginia Creeper?

Dan, if you do a search of the archived posts under Bar Chatter, you will find that there has been a previous thread about West Virginia Creeper, who was on CC and the LPA's first album. It tells on there what his real name is. I tried to search for it myself, but my search function isn't working tonight for some reason. Anyway, the poor guy sure struggled with his intonation (and everything else) didn't he? If I remember right, he hadn't been playing steel for very long when they recorded the album. He's probably a terrific player now. When I started out, I sounded worse than him though. Now I sound just as good as Bobby Black...NOT! Bobby always has been an idol of mine, he is my idea of a very accomplished and well-rounded player, and an exceptional Western Swing player. Good luck in your search Dan, it's great to have you here on the Forum.

Steve Davis is the WVC.
He used to play bass in the Detroit bar band scene, and CC & TLPA started out as a bar band. He went to school with some of the Cody guys, and as they went from bar band to psycke/blues/R&B hippy transition, they came out the other side slowly getting more and more into country, swing, etc. Thus inspired by the other members and his own new taste in music he took up steel.
Remember Bill Kirchen had started as a folkie and bluegrass picker, before the bar band scene, while most of the group were from the stomping mid 1960s frat rock scene.

Where is he know.. geez who knows.
The group is having a set of reunion gigs early next year, but with Bobby Black on steel.

CC and the LPA (with Bobby Black) are supposed to appear on the Jan. 13th broadcast of "A Prairie Home Companion." I myself intend to not miss it.

So West Virginia Creeper started out musical life as a bass player. That seems to be the previous life for a lot of steel players, including me. Any others on the forum who are primarily bass players and "closet" steel players? Just curious?

I believe a little known fact about Steve Davis is that he is/was a proficient classical guitarist, according to Cornell Hurd (who had WVC in his band back in the mid-70's).

Interesting trivia guys, I wondered if he continued on the steel path, now I know he did, at least through the 1970s.

Dan Farrell, I'm not sure about anyone else that started on bass, then went to steel, but bass playing steelers include of course the Big E, as well as an interesting Californian country outfit Danny Michaels & The Rebel Playboys, which seemed to have a host of bassists who also played steel, sometimes switching roles as the line-ups changed.

The "steel player-bass player" query might be a good topic for another thread. Since you asked, I always wanted to play bass. And if I could, I'd play in the melodic Jaco/Pino Pallidino fretless style.
Sorry, I don't know anything about West Virginia Creeper.

As I recall, the official reason for getting rid of The Creeper was because he wsa "too Creepy"

If yer too creepy to hang with the Commander, that's a bad thing.

I played steel with Danny Michaels for a couple of years in the early 60's. We played at the Hitching Post in Gardena, California and later at George's Roundup in Long Beach. The bass player was Bob Boydd, who also played steel. Bob was a member of the forum. He passed away a few months ago.

Hey Guys - If any of you read much about "Mr Vegas" "Wayne Newton", You'll know that he had asperations early on of being a steel-man. He started on "lap". Peace - Jimmie
