I don't think I have ever heard his name
mentioned, Ken Greer played with a Canadian
Rock Band called Red Rider, One Song will
convince you, "White Hot", I believe it was
there first record and best ( in my opinion )
His tone was wicked, creative ideas, never
mimicked a six string, always used it with
taste, that one song is worth the price of the record, one thing about his tone, it
at times sounded like glass shattering, at
times a roaring lion, the guy was way ahead
of the pack in my opinion, and to my ears
was not just putting a rat or tube screamer
in front of his amp, more complex tone.
He was in Vancouver in the 80's when the record was done, in fact that record might
have been in the late 70's, not sure.
Anyways for any of you that want a good
thrashing in tasty Rock Steel check
out that song, He is not well known, but maybe some of you on the west coast know of
him, Maybe Dan Tyack? I put his playing
up there with PF'work on Dire Straits, and
Greg Leitz (Spelling? ) with Joni Mitchell.

I saw him in a video once, and he used what appeared to be a knurled bar.( the same type of rough finish thats used on a telecaster tone and volume knobs)

He coaxed a wicked distored slide tone out of a stringmaster.

I think he is one of those guys who saw the
steel as a "means to an end", the steel
could do things and sounds different than a
six string. At the same time he would have a
Les Paul on his back, for another part of the tune, for another sound.

A knurled bar - WICKED. I must try this... Are you sure about that, I would think that it's really hard on strings.

Greg;

I was just thinking of Ken Greer w/Red Rider yestrday in response to the RnR steel thread - very cool you brought it up!

He was a also with a band called Big Faith - unfortunately now defunct - that did a couple/three CDs and was even more outside - it had Fergus Marsh on Stick as well as Ken on PSG - saw them live in Edmonton about 10 years ago - Ken wailing on a beat-up old Sho-Bud

Thanks for mentioning him - worth checking out; "White Hot" was on a Red Rider album titled "Don't Fight It". He's also listed as specifically playing steel on the Red Rider Albums "As Far As Siam", Tom Cochrane and Red Rider" and "Victory Day"

Matt,

Red Rider had a top ten record out in the early 80's called "Lunatic Fringe. The video was in heavy rotation on MTV,with several close up shots of Ken. Its been a long time, but Im almost positive about the bar. He plays a cool solo in that song, complete with a very real sounding siren effect. I also remember that the video starts out with a shot of a black helecopter, beautiful women, lotsa hair and someone is wearing a bunch of uhhhhh....leopard skin clothing.
You know, a typical pedal steel job

Whoa - I always thought Lunatic Fringe was by Golden Earring! That explains a lot. A knurled bar - I've gotta call Jim Burden...
