Anybody catch Tom Brokaw interviewing George W. and Laura Bush? They cut to a shot of the two of them dancing to ET's "Waltz Across Texas" during Buddy's classic steel break. Anyhow, I thought it was cool! Forget politics! That's what the country needs: Buddy Charleton in primetime!

I doubt he has ever had to ask anyone for a
re-count.

Buddy Charleton is a TRULY legendary figure who was noted for his mastery of BOTH necks as well as, with Leon Rhodes, co-inventer of "Cowboy Jazz"!! Bruce Bouton, Paul Franklin, Herby Wallace, Hal Rugg and so many others attribute a significant influence to Charleton. Paul Franklin, with Brent Mason, wrote and recorded, "Doin' the Charleton"!! Herby Wallace, with Thumbs Carllile and Sonny Thomas, wonderfully re-created those landmark tunes cut by Charleton & Rhodes. Sonny even went over to Leon's home to ask him how he played those songs! I'll never forget Scotty's Convention when @ 1986 Hal Rugg before he played "The Waltz You Saved For Me" said,"This goes out to you Bud because you are one of my heroes!!" Also at Scotty's I'll never forget when Marty Stuart and Gary Hogue brought the house down, after praising Charleton & Rhodes, by playing, "Honeyfingers". Buddy's birthday is the same as Bob Wills, Wes Montgomery, and Michaelangelo!! A more humble, gentle giant has never existed. All of us love you and Kay Lee!!

One of my most treasured albums is the Steel Guitar Record Club selection (Tom Bradshaw made available) by Buddy called "Almost to Tulsa". The title song and a bunch of others by Buddy, Leon and the rest of the Texas Troubadors are on the record. A terrific version of "The Waltz You Saved for Me" is included. And the "liner notes" - wow - a great mini-autobiography by Buddy, with several photographs.

Never got to meet him, but have always admired his playing.

Just a note of "personal history". I first "found" Buddy when I was 14 years old. A couple of years later, I finally got to meet him. It was at one of those "outside, Sunday Afternoon" country music shows, in "Brown County", In. Buddy let me follow him around all afternoon - not only answering what I'm sure were some pretty dumb questions, but offering information.
I'm sure that he had things he'd rather done, even in those boring hours between shows, but he let this kid "hang around", and talk about deer tracks around the lake, Ernest Tubb, "SHO-BUD" Guitars, Leon (OH YEAH!!), how to block, bass fishing, "Emmons"Guitars "Almost TO Tulsa", his tuning, a little about laying brick and block, Jack Mollette (WOW!!), and about 3 dozen other subjects that I just KNOW were of the utmost importance to him!!
I could drive then, but I didn't have a car (drag-racing and a "Hurst Mystery-Shifter"- you guys 'member them??, had cost me a transmission), so I was "bummin'" a ride from dad. I remember him saying something about me "walking so tall that I might not be able to fit in that damned Ford sedan" when he came after me.
Sorry - when it comes to "my way" of honoring a gentleman like B.C., I can easily get carried away, and go all night.
Well, time passes, life goes on, and that "long-ago" 16 year old is now 51, (groan)!!!
I'll tell you this - I remember a "special" guy, a VERY special Sunday, and I'm sure that I'll have this memory for as long as my mind "ticks " just half-way right
Thanks Buddy - you don't remember me, but you will never know what that afternoon was to me...

For Christmas this year, I was Given the last of the series of The Bear Family Tree CD Box Set of Ernest Tubb by my wife. Although most of this series is after Leon left the band, it features Buddy Charleton on almost every cut up until he left the Band in 74. It picks up I believe around 1967. The series is "Another Story". If you are a Buddy Charleton Fan you have to get this series. The one before it is "Waltz Across Texas". I do not have this series, but it starts around 1960. This is on my Birthday list.

P.S.
How about Johnny Cox for Vice President?

Bud Charleton has got to be one of my all time heroes both as an extraordinary steel player and beautiful person.I first heard him play on the Ernest Tubb Midnite Jamboree shortly after taking the Big E's place with E.T. Big shoes to fill and he filled them well.
