Frisell's new album, "Blues Dream" came out yesterday. I was clamoring at the register as soon as I got out of work.

Leisz rocks! Playing all things steel, he pumps out some nice country psg, growling lap steel parts, haunting lapstyle reso, and moody National bottleneck parts. He plays steel in contexts that you'd never expect. Can't wait to see him play with Frisell's New Quartet in Chicago in April!!

This album is not for the faint of heart. This is a moody jazz album, bridging Frisell's past horn-inflected compositions and his current fasination with american roots-style music. It's like hearing old and new Frisell simultaneously. Sometimes avant garde, sometimes stately, sometimes bluesy, sometimes country, this album takes the listener on little trips into the unknown. Wow. Again, Wow!!

Thanks for the tip!
Another great Bill Frisell record with Greg Leisz is Good Dog,Happy Man. And check out Nashville (no steel but Jerry Douglas on Dobro). Bill Frisell is a guitar player with amazing touch, taste, and tone.
Where can I hear more from Greg Leisz?

Leisz has played with just about everyone, it seems. OK, maybe that's an exaggeration, but you can find him on albums by kd Lang, Peter Case, Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow (I think), Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Jewel, Beck, Dave Alvin, Paula Cole, Fiona Apple, Joni Mitchell...uh, to name a few.

Good Dog, Happy Man and Nashville are two of my all-time favorite albums. Frisell is a master and puts together some of the best bands I can imagine.

I was in NYC on my way to see Bill Frisell at the Village Vanguard one night, stopped to look in the window of Matt Umanov Guitars. I look next to me and there is Bill Frisell doing the same thing. "Bill!" I say. He looks up, slightly startled, and we talk guitars for awhile. I tell him I'm coming to see him play tonight. After the gig, he sees me in the audience and motions me up to the stage. Then he hands me his guitar, a beautiful Andersen 14" Oval Hole Archtop, and asks me what I think.
He's a genuinely humble, very nice guy. He is a great example and inspiration that it is possible to play exactly what you want, disregarding categories and labels, and find success.

By all means go hear Greg play with Bill Frisell, it is an amazing experience. Greg is the master of taste and feel, one of my favorite steel players.

He's playing on April 20th at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. As far as I know, it hasn't sold out yet, but that info was from last week's Chicago Reader.

By the way, lap style acoustic guitarist and singer Kelly Joe Phelps is opening the show...as if I needed any more motivation.

Phelps is incredible in his own right, singing soulful blues-influenced tunes and playing travis picked acoustic slide parts. His lastest album is a beautiful piece of work called Shine-Eyed Mister Zen. !'ll say wow twice for Phelps too!! Wow...and I mean Wow!

All times are Pacific (US)
