![]() ![]() I just heard "Slow Poke" on a local PBS station for the first time in a long time. Who played steel in Pee Wee King's band? I was very tasteful. |

![]() ![]() Bobby Koefer, Don Davis and Jim Vest all played with Pee Wee. The orginial cut was probably either Don or Bobby because Jim played latter on in the early-mid 60's. Kevin |

![]() ![]() While we are talking about Pee Wee King and Bobby Koefer. Is any one aware of a new Bloodshot records compilation of 51 previously unreleased Pee Wee King Radio transcriptions. The actual stuff is not that hot, too "Lawrence Welk meets Spade Cooley" for my taste. But I was wondering if Bobby Koefer was the steel player on these tracks. They date from 1952 I believe. I think Bobby played with Pee Wee King around that time. |

![]() ![]() Pee Wees book says that Roy Ayers played on slowpoke. Roy was noted for his smoothness and tone. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() C.C. Does that book tell when these guys played with Pee Wee? It would be nice to have a time line of the steel player in Pee Wee's band or all the great road bands. Kevin |

![]() ![]() After the success that was had identifying the steel guitarist in the Cowboy Copas photo I was going to make a post requesting who had played on Slowpoke. But I had anothe question as well. What tuning was that?? I have never heard that chord since those days and it has literally haunted me as one of the bestI have ever heard. I used to think it was some guy that flew in from California because it was special and different. I don't think I've heard that phrasing any where since he (??) played it on Slowpoke. Regards, Paul(e) |

![]() ![]() What year did "Slow Poke" come out? The recording I heard on the radio sounded as is it were just recorded, it was clear and bright. Perhaps a remastered version... |

![]() ![]() I believe Slow Poke was originaly 1951 or 52. I will also agree with Steve E that the Pee Wee collection is not the best of that Bloodshot series. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() Kevin, he mentions alot of musicians in the book and recordings but no disography and details. I drug out an old kinescope in which Pee Wee says Bobby Koefer played on Slowpoke. Just to add to the confusion. Sometimes the collaboraters don't put down what the co author tells them exactly. I think if Bobbe Seymore says it was Koefer I'd take his word for it. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() That song "Slowpoke" had a nice lift and nice chord parts in it. It really went over with the dancers. I played it on my 6 pedal Gibson Electra-harp back around 1950 or so. I think I'll fool around with it again and see if I remember how I played it. I also remembered playing "I'm confessin that I love you" a beautiful song. Nice chord structure in that too.Ahh memories.....al |

![]() ![]() Kevin, you mentioned that Jim Vest played with Pee Wee in the early-mid 60's, was that for a Cuca (or Cucca?) label album? |

![]() ![]() Here is a couple of Bobby Koefer stories he told Jeremy Wakefield. Bobby said he buried his Triple Custom Fender in his back yard for 20 years when he quit playing for that time(wow what an idea). Also he playes his Triple 8 Fender Custom that he bought brand new in the 50's; only stringin' up 7 strings on each neck. He said he broke a string on one neck and never replaced it and just got used to playing it as a 7 string; so he strung up the other two necks with 7 strings. If you ever meet or have met Bobby Koefer; you will understand these stories; as he is really a funny guy, but one of the sweetest steel players you will ever meet. Bobby's style of playing is so intriguing; and his Chording thoughout a song is just killer. You have to see this man to believe what you hear. Love live Bobby Koefer. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() Jason I know that there is a 45 on CUCA J-1247 (DANNY BOY/I'M PRAYING FOR THE DAY). There is also an LP not sure what label. A friend of mine has it I'll check his copy. The original version came out in the fall of 1950. Kevin |

![]() ![]() What Ricky and Steve said. Dana Wills has a funny Koefer story that I would not presume to retell.... ![]() And if you haven't SEEN Bobby Koefer playing Hawaiian War Chant, then you have got something to look forward to.
