There is a very active steel player in Cody, Wyoming by the name of Ric Epperle. Not too far from Billings, Mt... As far as I know, there is one steel player active in Billings. His name is Homer Simon..[This message was edited by Ric Epperle on 27 March 2001 at 08:58 AM.]

When I played at "Mal's Supper Club" in Butte Mt. at least 20 yrs ago, some folks from the crowd came up to me on our 1st break of the night and told me that they had driven 250 miles to see us play because we had a Pedal Steel in the band. They told me that counting me, there were a total of 3 players in the state that they knew about. They must have really wanted to hear some PSG, because this took place in December and it was -60 and snowing hard outside! JE:-)>

Kyle, I don't know of any now but your question stirred some old memories of the days--about 20 years ago, Jim--when I was one of the handful of Montana steelers. I was a member of Montana Skyline Band, out of Missoula. We were active in the Northwest from 1978-82, had a couple of records out. BTW, Jim, we played in Butte at the Black Angus, I think. Stayed in the old Grand Hotel downtown; remember it? And Chuck, we gigged at the Park Plaza Hotel in Lethbridge, too, for a couple of weeks. That's where we encountered the famous Canadian Split Audience Arrangement: due to 'interesting' liquor laws, there was a fence running from the bandstand down the middle of the room. One side was for drinking and listening but no dancing. The other side (with a completely different decor!) was where you could dance if and only if you ordered food. Hope you meet some Montana steelers, Kyle. Gotta be some out there. Roy Smith (Sho-Bud) was playing at the old Log Cabin outside of Missoula when I moved into town, but I think he relocated to Texas and went back into welding. Ah, memories of Big Sky highways and overloaded Dodge vans ... Nostalgically, Chris ------------------ from the oasis ....

When I used to play down in Billings in the late 70's we would pop down to the Horshoe for a jam they had and steel players came out of the woodwork. I think about 2 or 3 great retired roadplayers got up and played. Haven't heard anything since, also a lot of years ago.

In the early '60's, the band I was working with was booked on the "Nevada Cirduit",a young Steeler (about 17 yrs. old, I think), from Livingston, Mont., joined us in Carson City at The Nugget. His name was Alvie Ostrum if I remember correctly. Would anyone up there know what became of him? I think of him now, and again, and often wonder if he per-sued a career in music or not, because he was a very talented young man, and a Hell of a nice kid to boot. Any information would be appreciated.------------------ Dino

We've probably crossed paths, John. quote: Ric! whats a steel layer? maybe we better not go there! Oh why not! Homer sounds like a lucky man!
Sorry about the spelling.. I think I fixed it... There were a number of steel players in Billings, Mt. back in the 70s and early 80s when we played there. I remember the Horse shoe club very well.. Jammed there all of the time, (on our nights off).. A few names of excellent players I do remember: Harley Brendle. (passed away from cancer last year). Jim Bob Garrett (who later became Sammy Kershaw's band leader and steel picker.) Jimmy Goodman My dad (Gene Epperle). Homer Simon. (I worked with him in a duo for a couple of years). Frank Carter (worked with a group called Big Country), and has since, moved to L.A. Allen Mead (a real monster on the steel), ended up in Vegas as a 21 dealer and along with his wife, committed suicide a couple of years ago. A young kid by the name of Manny Anderson (went to Rapid City, S.D. last I heard. There were a couple more, but I can't remember their names... BTW.. We worked as a family band "The Epperles", all over Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, the Dakotas, and Canada, back in the mid to late 70s... quote: Ah, memories of Big Sky highways and overloaded Dodge vans ... Nostalgically,
Didn't we pay some dues?

Oliver English.. I knew that!! Thanks, Redd. The last time I heard Oly play was 1987.. A very fine steel player and a heck of a nice fellow, as I recall... I wonder if he is still around. My oldest son and his wife, live in Great Falls. We're planning a trip up there in the next month or so. I'll try to look him up...
