monroe's version is the first song i have any conscious memory of, in 1949. haven't heard it in decades and frankly cannot remember the steel on it.i know that joaquin was on the sons of the pioneers version recorded earlier that year, so i would guess joaquin without listening. they are both rca recordings; i think it is a year or two too early for speedy, and he was pretty well tied in with capitol anyway; pretty sure it is a west coast record, which could mean boggs, but i will stick with murphey as a rank guess.

jody:i was guessing west coast only because i associate monroe with hollywood and films as well as being just a recording artist. also i just guessed that as a pioneers song (stan jones??), it may have been more a west coast phenomena in 1949 rather than the worldwide classic it has since become. i haven't heard the song in ages. it made a serious impression on me in 1949, rolling down the reno to winnemucca highway across the desert in a 1948 cadillac, with a high and canvas covered load. i can't place the steel part, and have no way of hearing it. where was it recorded?? that would be a clue, especially if not nashville. it could be some totally off the wall guy for all i know without listening. there weren't that many nationally known studio steel men in 1949.

Actually I'm with Mitch on the vibe of the song having a whole West Coast feel. I realise that there were New York Cowboy performers on radio as early as the 1930s, maybe even earlier. I tend to assume that a lot of Western themed material is from the West coast, sure the various record labels were from all over, but I tend to think of the music as Western through geography as much as sound. I'm assuming that it was an East coast production and cut in New York, especially as Jody is the Easterner veteran here. The steeler, geez Jody I have no idea?

I have the original 45 of it but it's warped so I can't play it. I don't recall a steel in it either. In Frankie Lanes version of that great song, the only thing I can remember is an accordian. ------------------ SUAS U' PHIOB Geo

Jody: I recall the record and I was a blood hound in those days for anything that even remotely sounded like a steel guitar. The slightest gliss and my brain would go: There's one of them things again. Later I learned to go: There's one of those guitars again and still later; steel guitars. There was a guy on the Aurthur Godfrey show; Remo Parmiaro and I just know I have butchered the spelling on that one but it's the best I can do. Was it he? And an afterthought: Why would any steel guitarist work for a guy who was always Racing With The Moon? (Opps, sorry up there in Alaska!) Regards, Paul

Paul,,,,you are old as you said you were ,but not as old as I....you are getting close now,,,Remo Palmeiri,,,played straight guitar for Godfrey,I was with Godfrey for a spell as I won the Talent scout show in Feb of 1955 doing a solo spot playing "Caravan" and stayed on with Godfrey,,,with the McGuire sisters Carmel Quinn,,Frank Parker, Marion Marlowe and natch Tony Marvin the announcer with the deep voice,,La Rosa etc I sent Roger Shackelton a memeber of the Forum a copy of my performance on Feb 7th 1955,,,as for Ghost Riders you are getting close.

Paul- The guy that won on Arthur godfrey's talent scouts was Rico Terchetti. He played a copy of Alvino Rey's "St.Louis Blues" did a good job and won. It was around 1950.I also Copied Alvino's arrangement of "St.Louis Blues" on my Gibson Electra-Harp and wondered, Gee, why didn't I go down there and do that. Arthur was fascinated by Rico's guitar, he built his own home made pedal job, and that was the story.....al

For Jody and Al: Now I've gotcha Jody! Somebody call Bobbe and tell him to read this. I was talking about radio! You know, what they had before the pictures were there with the music. He had a two hour talk and variety show on AM radio, heck it was even before FM.. Before that it was BE. Not Buddy Emmons: Before Electronics! They had this cabinet called a Victrola made by some puppies (Lasha??} in NY. (PA?) I know that because one of them was on the front of it with his mama. And it had a handle on the side that you wound up to power it. And I may be wrong but I'm sure I heard Remo on a Hawaiian Electric Steel Guitar as Athur would call it. That's how I figured out what those sounds were. Arthur told me!! Al, not only was it before pedals but I think maybe it was before they had more than six strings. If I'm not older than you guys, then I must have been in diapers. I mean the cloth kind you mother threw in the bucket with a lid on it. Not the plastic things they use now to fill up the landfill. Why do they fuss about filling it if it's a "Fill"? Regards, Paul

good try Smiley, but I'll wager it does have steel in it, and the question is even TRICKIER than you imagine...let's see... who WAS playing/recording steel on the East coast (read NYC-after all where else were they recording major acts like Monroe ), back in that time period... wink wink nudge nudge say no more...

I played a fender Triple neck guitar....would you like a copy of the show the night I won.....say it and Ill mail to you,,,,,My stories are accurate,,,,there is no BS in my repetiore....I may not have been the greatest,,,but I dont misrepresent. In fact I still have a carton Of Liptons Tea one of Godfreys sponsors.....need a bag??? I have learned two things in my lifetime 1 never discuss religion 2 never discuss politics 3 I just learned some thing since being on this Forum....Never discuss steel guitar as there are always pessimists out there. Send me you mailing address Ill mail you a tape of the Godfrey Show,,,,Yes Rico did play St Louis Blues,,,do you recall what number he played on the show the next day after the talent scout show,,,,man you are a hard guy to convince.......IM not getting paid for this,,,just the facts thats all. I have no idea who played steel on "Ghost Riders in The Sky" by Vaughn Monroe. Or if there was a steel on it at all. I do remember hearing the recording in the late 40's I believe.I also seem to recall someone on the Arthur Godfrey show play a Rube Goldberged pedal steel guitar. And my memory on it is very vague but it seems the pedals were installed on chains. And I seem to recall them being all over the place like even on the right end of the guitar. I think he played quite well. But not really sure. Is this the gentleman Paul and Jody are talking about? I used to wonder about this. carl

I will tell all of you this story....and get it over with,,,,Dave Van Allen posted something that I will reply to,,,as Dave did not readily admit his inner feelings,,,but to prove Daves point and to you Smiley another one of my favorite guys,,, I want to say this and then I will tell all...I have said it time and time again I was not a great steel player by a long shot but I do tell the truth. Everything I have posted to make you guys laugh and get a kick out of has been the Gods honest truth,,, I have nothing to gain by exaggerating,,,in fact the stories are funnier in person as I could really use the language that was used and it would oprobably be funnier than editing it for the internet,,, The Buddy Rich Story I never got the chance to tell. The Danny Davis & The Nashvile Brass that I never got to tell when his band was the house band years ago at a club in New Yorks Greenwich Village, where danny a good friend had the main orchestra which was great and danny sang great also,,,,his band backed me up on the steel as I played on the Floor shows back then,,,,he was always amused at the type of music we played,,,I worked with my dad Zeb Carver. This was long before he went to Nashville to become the super star he was and still is,,, but I will not get the chance to tell that story and I will tell you why later. While Danny was working at the Village Barn where my dad worked off and on since 1932,,,danny went on chance of a "Lifetime" and the winner of the show would each week compete against the contestants,,,,danny won hands down for about 14 week in sucession,,,his Great trumpet and voice doing Apple Cherry Blossom pink won him first prize the first time out,,,that tune was written I beleive by Prez Prado. At the same time as Danny was on that show,,,I was also doing the Godfrey show,,,Meyer Horowitz the owner of the barn had two guys on major network shows at the same time working at his club.....there is much more,,,but I will not take this time or any other time to tell that story,,,,for any non beleivers ,,,I dont know why there should be,,,but people are people,,,if ya ever see Danny,,,tell him Jody and Zeb said Hi,,,my dad has passed on,,,but danny is a good friend still. Enough of that...ask him if he remembers the great backup his band did on my specialty numbers like Carvan Limehouse blues etc....he will remember. I will reply again,,,,this is getting to be a drag on me,,,I have taken this on myself and i will finish it myself too. in the next thread,,,,,stay on here ,,,be right back,,I drink a lot of Coca Cola and you know how it is.

OK Im back,,,I will not tell The Herb Alpert Story,,nor the Buddy Rich story nor the Perry Como story,,,but will tell this last one.I was called in to RCA Victor recording studio in 49,,,I was just a young kid,,,Eddie Mc Mullen did the original session with Vaughn Monroe,,,,he called me and told me ,,,they drove him nuts at the studio,,,this was my teacher at the time,,,the same guy that wrote NoBody wins In The Game Of Broken Hearts,,,a big hit back in the 50's he and his wife sally did a duet on the original and was later recorded by many big name artists,,,,Eddie and his wife sally recorded under the name of Sally & Marvin Clark,,,, Eddie was a nice guy ,,but had a temper,,,he told the A&R man at RCA to find himeself another steel player for Ghost Riders. I was taking lessons from Eddie at the time, he called me and told me of the BS he went through and said S,,,,,,w them,,,he then said,,,,why dont you call Roy Horton and ask Roy to ask Steve Sholes if you can do the session,,,,they had not done the session as yet ( at least not the finished project) there was something missing( a steel) I got the call from RCA....how would any of you feel going into a studio where the guy who was teaching you failed to cut the mustard????? and me I was going to do it???? You must know this,,,I have also been a failure many times over,,I have never bragged on myself as a player,,, I only post these stories to give you guys a laugh or two.... I went in to the studio,,,,and the A& R man was suprised to see me ,,,such a young guy He gave me the head phones and said here read this,,,,,,I couldnt read too well at all and especially what was written....as as Gene Jones quoted Chet as saying,,,,I read music but "never let it interfere with my playing,,,,that was about it for me too. I read and read and the A&R man was getting a bit anxious,,,,he said ,,,whats the problem truth is the part that was written (small part) did not lend itself to the steel guitar it was obvious that the arranger was not familiar with the range of the steel guitar. I wasnt playing an oboe here....my hands were sweating and I said to myself ,,,that lousy Eddie Mac did this to me. I listened and listened,,,where Vaughn Monroe did,,,,yippe I ay,,,,I ad libbed and did a single string "echo repeat" to his yippi I ay,,,then he sang yippie I ohhh,,,I did that too followed his voicing with my steel ,,, did exactly as he sang it,,,,he smiled at me and winked in agreement with my taste,,,,the A&R man didnt like what I did and thentold me of the steel player a few days before( didnt know Eddie referred me )he told me how adament he was,,,I couldnt tell him he was my teacher,,,. Once more yippie Iay (voice) steel single string in an eerie sound I felt was approriate boingy boing boing,,,,,,,he said CUT,,,,,there was a discussion going on,,,he came over and said,,,,whats your name,,??? He didnt ask the first time he first met me,he said Jody,,,,it just dont fit in,,,Im sorry,,,but replied,,,you will get scale for your time,,,,my heart dropped,,,the sweat was pouring off me,,,,Vaughn Monroe walked over to me and said,,,I like your playing and I like you,,,you will be hearing from me again. The record was released and I was "The Ghost Rider" never heard the steel,,they released it as it was originally recorded,,,,no steel, Vaughn Monroe kept his word and I was called back to do an LP with his orchestra,,,where he sang Cowboys Seranade,,,,Rounded Up in Glory and a few others that I played on,,,nothing great just simple fills in the right places ,,,but there is more to the story,,, but Im sorry to say,,,that I have enjoyed the time I have been afforded by bOb Lee to tell my stories,,,I am getting a bit weary,,I do this for the humor and hope that you get some enjoyment out of my stories,,,but I have been advised on more than a few occasions to just watch the Forum as many others do....as their intelligence was insulted at times and they stopped particpating in the Forum,,,and although I do appreciate all the time bOB lee has afforded me,,, Iam not a prima donna,,,sure I have thin skin at times,,,,thats why im human,,,I dont feel that with the exception of many friends I have made that I wish to continue,,as i said before,,,LESS IS MORE So I will say LESS THAN LESS and say nothing from here on in and join those who advised me but I failed to take their advice... I have nothing to gain here other than to entertain you Im not writing a book Im not an ego maniac,,,Im not a sex maniac I wanted to be ,,,but I couldnt pass the physical.. So to those who enjoyed my little bit of "quote" long winded stories,,,this is my last,,,,and as Roy Rogers said,,,may the good lord take a likin to ya,,,,look for my book someday,,,then if you dont like it you could return it for a store credit,,, I will now join the list of Ex Forumites......Thank you,,,,Jody Carver bOb dont bother to close the door ,,,,I'll see myself out PS I Love you" remember that tune???? On the topic of Vaughn Monroe, that's a pretty cool story Jody, what was the album you recorded with him? I only ask out of general interest and also I've noticed that labels like Jasmine in the UK have been reissuing his albums on CD.Jody, you know your posts might be shorter if you didn't take the time and space to write how you're going to make your posts shorter. Later when me and the boyfriend were buying old 45's we got Vaughn's version of "Mr Sandman" with a flipside They Were Doing the Mumbo" Sept 1999 at Texacalli grille Austin Tx. I get my first listen to the Feudin and Fightin tracks and tell Danny what I know about about that track.

I gotta confess, prior to joining the FORUM, I had never heard of "Jody Carver"...indeed, I was trying to figure if this person was male or female as "Jody" can be a male/female name. Anyway Jody, I have enjoyed your stories very much and hope you will continue with the reminiscing on the FORUM. You've obviously had a great musical career and I, for one appreciate your sharing it with us.
