![]() ![]() I bought The Essential Connie Smith cd. Tons of great steel work on it!! I knew this beforehand because I've heard almost all of the songs before, just didn't have any of it on cd. The cd doesn't list any musician credits (surprise, surprise). The songs are the Connie Smith standards, Once A Day, I'll Come Runnin', etc. Who played steel on her stuff? To my ear it sounds a LOT like Hal Rugg and sometimes like Weldon Myrick. Can anyone definitively tell me who played on Connie's early stuff? FWIW, I have Connie's latest cd too, simply titled "Connie Smith". Gary Hogue is all over it and you can hear quite a bit of Marty Stuart influence on it. IT IS AWESOME! Lots of drivin' 2/4 shuffles. GREAT! Dave Alfstad |

![]() ![]() Dave, Weldon Myrick did "Once a Day", and was on many of her earlier recordings. It is interesting to note that Connie was, and is a very big fan of the steel guitar as well as being one of the all time great country female singers. Not only that but such a beautiful and gracious lady as well. They don't come any better than Connie Smith. Oh, they may make more splash and money. But Connie epitomizes what many of us call "country". The greatest thrill of my life was the time her and Marty Stuart performed at the ISGC. I happened to have been the video cameraman during that set. It was a thrill one only can dream of. And I happened to see that precious human being sitting off to the side of the stage while Marty was singing. And I swung that camera over on her to catch the joy and love she was showing for our kind of music. I will cherish that set forever. God bless Connie, Weldon and all the rest of you always, carl |

![]() ![]() Weldon did the ride on "I'll Come Runnin", and NOBODY'S topped it yet. He's always been one of my favorites, and he played on most of Connie's early stuff. [This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 09 May 2001 at 08:39 PM.] |

![]() ![]() I have a Connie Smith Live from Branson CD with Jack Smith as band leader and on Steel. This is just a wonderful collections of her hits with some medleys in for good measure. IMHO Jack is a truly great player, covers signature licks yet has a definate tone and touch of mastery all his own. I want to play like that when I grow up. Go Jack. Bill Bailey ------------------ |

![]() ![]() Donny, the only other person I have ever heard that could do the intro to "I'll Come Runnin", like Weldon did it was John Hughey. Check John Hughey's CD that has the yellow cover. This recording was done about 20 years ago. I talked to John in Silaom Springs, and he said he couldn't play it now. I bet he could. That intro will separate the sheep from the goats. Live from Branson you say? I don't remember that. Rusty Hurst used to play for her when she came to Branson. That was a long time ago at the Roy Clark Theather. I can't remember her being here in a long time. Then again there are about 40 plus big shows in Branson, and I'm always missing out on something. I just learned from Bruce Zumsteg that Russ Weaver is in town doing another Patsy Cline tribute show at some theater. [This message was edited by Keith Hilton on 09 May 2001 at 09:00 PM.] |

![]() ![]() Connie shared billing with Ray Price about 68 or 69 in Bakersfield and the E was a no show but she had Russ Hicks with her and he did "Come running" flawlessly and also did the Price portion of the show and it was a great program and I was in love with Miss Connie then and still am but she didn't know it but is moot now as my wife is #1. It seems they announced at the show that originally, "I'll Come Running" was a much slower song and someone came up with the idea to speed it up and wow, much better, Gary |

![]() ![]() Weldon was on almost all of Connie Smith's early recordings. My favorite is "Then And Only Then". Connie Smith can still blow any female vocalist off the stage. One of the most beautiful people I have ever met. Jody. |

![]() ![]() I love that Essential Connie Smith CD. Weldon at his best, and it doesn't get any better. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() After Weldon, I did two or three albums with Connie. I guess I need to dig them out and see how many I did. Can't remember right off hand. "One of those senior moments I guess." John Hughhey |

![]() How do we say anything on this post you are already talking about the greatest Female voice there ever was and some of the greatest steel players Weldon was great and I heard Rick Price do I'll come running and you would have thought weldon was playing it. By the way Rick is probably one of the most underrated steel players in the whole state of Texas. An the in comes one of the Masters John Hughey. WOW |

![]() ![]() At the Siloam Springs steel show, a old bass player of mine, from years back, took one look at John Hughey and said; "That's the guy who played that really difficult tune you learned". What he meant was, it almost killed me learning the steel ride John did on "Lost In The Feeling of Love" ,with Conway. At the time, this hot-shot horn blower in our band bet the rest of the band that I couldn't learn the ride to,"Lost In The Feeling of Love". It wasn't easy John, but I finally got it! It just kept going up, higher, and higher, and higher. |

![]() ![]() Thanks for all the replies guys. Connie Smith is one of my VERY favorite country singers, male or female. One of my other favorite female singers was Tammy Wynette. She and Connie both are very powerful vocalists but what tears me up is the FEELING that they have in their voices. Not to turn this into a modern-country-bashing topic here, but there's not even ONE female singer on the radio right now that has even a tenth of the feeling that Tammy or Connie have. I love Connie Smith and the fact that her stuff is jam packed with steel makes it even better. Dave Alfstad |

![]() ![]() Connie Smith, best female country singer. Connie Smith, prettiest country singer. "Nobody But A Fool" had the best steel guitar backup on her songs. |

![]() ![]() I have to go along with Connie and Tammy. There is another one that is not mentioned much, but I just love to here here sing. She has been around a long time. Her name is Jeannie Sealy. I don't know about you but I think that woman too, can sing a song. God bless, Connie, Tammy (posthumously), Jeannie and as always all of you, carl |

The credits say, Jack Smith, leader, arranger, Steel Guitar and harmony vocals. Jimmy Capps rhythm guitar Danny Park Guitar, Fiddle. Mark Pearman Fiddle. Rod Ham, Bass Steve Turner, drums. Hope this helps. Bill Bailey ------------------ |

![]() ![]() I don't remember her doing anything at the Lowes Theater, but from the credits you listed I am certain she did. Mark Pearman used to come and play fiddle with us when I played 6 nights a week at the Branson Inn for 5 years. Mark wound up getting married to one of the Lowe daughters. After the Lowe Theater failed, Mark went to work for Roy Clark. Mark is a really great fiddle player. |

![]() ![]() I made a post on here a little over a year ago about seeing Connie at Grove,Ok. and she had Jack Smith doing steel and back up vocals all at the same time and to make matters even more demanding, they bought a lead man that knew absolutely none of her materials. Wow ! Talk about carrying the show--Jack was absolutely incredible !!! Talking of Weldon's rides---how about the one he does behind Connie on Louisiana Man ??? Not to mention the one on Skeeter Davis' "Lover Not A Fighter" |
