I listen to more country than most do at the age of 22.I also realize that everyone talks about Buddy Emmons and Paul franklin. Please DO NOT take me the wrong way, because I love to hear both of them play the steel guitar. But I wonder why Dan Dugmore is'nt mentioned a whole lot on this forum.I have heard tghis man on many records and it is not just steel either, but a lot of his playing is steel guitar. This man is an extreamely good steel player. How come no one ever talks about Dan Dougmore?

You just DID, and that's a good thing. Steel players are humble. Just ask any of us!

Mary; I mentioned Dan in the BE and Fender thread on June 02. It was late at night and I wasn't sure of the spelling for his last name. And yes, like so many in the same category, he deserves more attention.

Best Regards Paul

Marty,
He's certainly one of my favorites. And in a very recent thread, looking for the top 10 non-instrumental recordings which showcase a great piece of steel playing, Dan's playing on "Blue Bayou", and the more recent "Soft Place to Fall" were mentioned. But if you look at the body of work out there, you'll see why Buddy, Lloyd, Pete, Paul, Jimmy etc. get the lion's share of the discussion here.

The Music Row magazine Musicians Awards were this week. They do an intense study of the Top 10 albums for the fiscal year, and rate the top players according to this. There were 38 records making the Top 10 this year, and the breakdown was (drumroll...) Paul Franklin--17 of these 38. Dan Dugmore was 2nd with 8, followed by a tie for Bruce Bouton, Scotty Sanders and Robbie Turner, each with 3, and Sonny Garrish and Lloyd Maines with 2 each. By the way, Paul has won this category every year since '94.

My hats off to all of y'all. Way to go.

Marty,
I agree totally. When I think of the most haunting solos I've ever heard, Blue Bayou comes to mind immediately.

Marty, you got me? I mentioned Dan Dugmore's very tasteful playing on Allison Moorer's CD, Alabama Song, some month's ago. Until I happened to hear a PBS DJ play a cut from her CD one night, coming home from a gig, I'd never heard of Dan Dugmore. The cut was "Tell Me Baby". The next day I e-mailed the DJ to get the name of the CD, which he gladly gave me. I went right out and bought a copy, and found out the Steel Player was Dan Dugmore.
His playing on Allison's CD is among the best I have ever heard. He seems to have the ability to put the right lick just where it needs to go. Also the Electric Guitar Player, Kenny Greenberg, is extremely talented and may be known by lots of players on here, but I had never heard of him either? This only goes to show me that there are a LOT of VERY TALENTED Steel Guitar Players, in particular, that are not getting the recognition that they deserve. When I was 22 years old, listing to Country Music on the Many Radio Stations that played Country, I could tell you, if the DJ didn't, in just a few notes of the song, the name of the person who kicked it off, Steel or Electric Guitar, or Fiddle player, and who the Singer was going to be. For quite sometime now, I can no longer do that, and I wish I could. I might add that Dan Dugmore's playing sold at least 1 copy of that CD....and probably more.... than he will ever be given credit for?

Hi Everyone,

I am no expert and I respect the playing of all you great players as well. I first met Dan's playing in Blue Bayou and that is the first real steel break I sat down to really study and do the best I can at it. What is interesting is how smoothly played that solo is.

Have a nice weekend,'

I will probably get in hot water for this but I think that many Nashville production people associated the work that Sneaky Pete did with Linda with Dan. At that time(1975-77) Dan's most well known hit was his solo on Ronstadt's "Blue Bayou". I think there was a perception that he played on her earlier(70-74) stuff(which was actually done by Sneaky Pete, Red Rhodes, and Danny Pendleton, Ed Black, and Buddy Emmons) ) and therefore was more well known than he actually was. I have heard this story from many people including some on this board. Having said this I think Dan has "made his bones" by cranking out some great stuff on Martina McBride's "Wild Angels" and numerous other recordings. There was perhaps some initial resentment about why he was getting so much studio work when he arrived in Nashville from all those other guys who were already there. Pete.

I don't think Dan cares whether steel players are talking about him.

As long as the producers keep talking about him. There's nothing like that phone call to help with self estime......

I was the one who did the interview with Dan for Steel Guitar World Magazine. Dan is more than a steel player. He is a great artist/ musician. He never set out to be the worlds greatest steel player. The beauty of his work lies far more with how he does what he does than what he does, just like Buddy's work. Dan is one of the guys that you can identify immediately by both his tone and his playing. His lap steel work is great. His acoustic work is great. His electric guitar work is great. John Fogerty of Creedance offered him a long term road job because of his unique sound and abilities. Nothing overly technically difficult about what he does, again its in his soulful playing. His work with Suzie Bogus and Tricia Yearwood was uniqely outstanding. He comes from the California hippie era which had its own culture. It gave him a different slant on steel. He still plays a Sho-Bud Pro-II through a Fender Twin with one 15 to get that sound that we are all familiar with on Blue Bayou. I just love his simple artistry when he plays. I play the same guitar as he does (Gary Morse also plays a Pro-II) to get close to that sound. I will stop here because I can go on for ever about Dan Dugmore. He is a real humble gentleman and is quite thankful for his achievements. I consider myself lucky to call him a friend.

Rayman: Any chance I could get a copy of the centerfold picture of Dan in a Field Of Fenders ? I sent mine to Fender when I was trying to see if they would even talk Steel Guitar. They wouldn't so I don't think I'll get my picture back. Regards, Paul

Once again Buddy Emmons has nailed it. The word to describe Dan's playing is "haunting." And "Blue Bayou" pretty much defines it. On Allison Moorer's "Soft Place to Fall" he takes it to a new level. Listen to the clip on her web site (under "discography") at http://www.mca-nashville.com/allisonmoorer/ . The lick right after she sings the word "ago".

BTW, there is some similarly haunting steel on Eddie Raven's "Island." Does anyone know if that was DD? Or was it BE?

Paul. The best I can do is color copy it for you out of the magazine. If this is acceptable email me your address and I'll send it to you.
