Hi Forumites! I'd like to take this opportunity to announce the release of a new c.d. featuring a group that I have been recording with and which has been in the making for quite some time.

The c.d. is called "Still Safe at Home" featuring The PORCH PICKERS with Neil Flanz. It features the collaberation of my good friend Mark Holland who owns and operates Gram's Place, a B&B and recording studio in Tampa named after the legendary Gram Parsons with whom I had the pleasure of touring and recording the Gram Parsons & the Fallen Angels Live 1973 album. Our new c.d. also features our good friend Walt Leuzinger who helped to produce and engineer much of the album as well as having composed three of the album's original songs including the title song "Still Safe at Home."

Also featured is a young talented Canadian friend of Mark's named Julien Robitaille whose vocal harmony and guitar work blend beautifully with Mark's raw, soulful vocals and are built around my pedal steel guitar resulting in an album that's sure to please everyone whose musical tastes lean toward raw, traditional Americana music.

The variety of songs includes everything from the Rolling Stone's "Dead Flowers" and "Wild Horses" to honkeytonk music including "Close up the honkeytonks", Merle Haggard's "Everybody's had the blues, Elvis Costello's "Stranger in the house", to several Gram Parsons songs including "Hot Burrito # 1, and even some songs by the Blue Yodeller Jimmie Rodgers. This album is a must for everybody who enjoys real down to earth music. To order a copy of this c.d. with a money order please e-mail me at neilflanz@mindspring.com. Please also check out my website for other items including my newly reprinted C 6th chord dictionary. My U.R.L. is http://www.ambrec.com/Homepages/neil/neil.htm
For those wishing to purchase the newly released c.d using Mastercard, Visa or American Express please e-mail gramspl@aol.com or call A/C 813 221-0596.Please also visit Mark's website at www.grams-inn-tampa.com and while there scroll to the bottom of the history and current music at Gram's Place. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Neil

I can say that having heard these tracks, they are approached uniquely and are tastefully presented. Some of the tunes are original, well crafted tunes. Some are covers, and covered well they are.

Neil's steel work on this shows his true style and brings out a feel that is not found in too many other places these days in original music and style. These guys have a very tight grip on the country rock sound formed by Neil's contributions to Gram Parsons' band (and others) during the early 70's and have tied it in nicely with a smooth contemporary approach.

The 4/4 honkytonk shuffle is right on.

Neil is the kind of player that squeezes more soul from a phrase with his characteristic sustaining style than almost anyone since Jimmy Day.

It is well worth the listen! Good Luck with the CD, Neil, Walt and Mark. Thanks for doing some really original stuff!

I've heard some cuts from this album and Neil has some very creative licks in there. Mark and Neil have been working on this album project for quite a while and it has a lot of the old Gram Parsons feel to it.

Definately not the current Nashville crap.

Okay, Bill Fulbrightgot it right on in his description, this CD has a wonderful contemporary feel, while totally holding true to the country-rock feel and vibe of the early 1970s, it's quite exceptional.

The steel work, well people this is Neil Flanz, the Neil Flanz we have read and heard about, who recorded solo albums in the 1960s and with Gram Parsons and Joe Sun in the 1970s.
And here he is, working as part of a funky-ass country group, tasteful fills, shuffles and so much more. I'm blown away, I feel like I'm on the tip of something big that's about to happen.
I love these guys!

Neil called me about two years ago. It was around 1 AM and my wife is wondering who in the H--- would be calling me at this hour ?
We talked some about the Chord Dictionary and
then about some old music stuff. He says:
Here is the way BE played this on the original record by Gene Watson and proceeded to play for me. Then: Now here is the way he does it on the new version. I sat right up in bed, it was that beautiful. (My wife took her cushion and went to sleep on the sofa; this was going to be a long conversation.)

I asked him where he was playing; I wanted to go and hear him work. He replied: No where; I'm just around the house now.

I remember feeling: Man if I could sound like that I'd be playing everywhere. Wayne Yakes had been telling me what an awesome player he was and I knew that but Neil had just shown me a glimpse of his talent as it
had now become and that is something I won't soon forget.

Sincerest Regards, Paul

Hi Paul,
First of all I'd like to thank you for your very complimentary remarks about my playing. I would also like to appologize to both you and your wife for calling at such an inappropriate hour. To those of you who have heard parts of the c.d. and written in to compliment it, I offer my sincere thanks. It feels great to know that the hard work that we all put into the project is appreciated.
Sincerely,
Neil

Congrats to Neil and Mark and all involved on a great job. Mark's raw vocals (my kind of singer)a refreshing and delightful change from the sterilized stuff being put out today. Neil's soulful playing on Jimmie Rodgers' "Miss The Mississippi and You" sung by Julian Robitaille sure takes you back when things were real. It's a fun cd and most enjoyable. I've already ordered my copies and sincerely wish you all great success. Way to go!!! Always a Flanz fan...Anne

I got the CD! The mix is so well done, and the new tunes I haven't heard since the demo are terrific. Good Luck with this project!

Anne, I like your comments about Mark, he has an interesting style, it reminds me of a some of the less tight and forced singer songwriters singers in the 1970s who tried their hand at country-rock. There's a real natural feel, not like a guy trying to sound 'country'...and alt-country fans should get a kick out of this as should anyone seeking real country music, not processed cheese pop that's used for movie soundtracks.

Hi Jason, not only is Mark the real deal but also a pleasure to work with and one heck of a human being. The mix of songs and stylings of Neil's playing is like a breath of fresh air from the current stuff all sounding the same today. Needless to say it's a real treat. Who knows they may the ones to start a new/old trend of country.../Anne

I got mine, the CD is great. I'd heard a lot of downloadable files that Neil was kind enough to share, but there's nothing like hearing them all on one CD with some cool packaging.
I really like the sleeve design, thank you Neil Flanz and the Porch Pickers.

Just Wanted to add my blessing and comment on Neils new CD. It takes me back to the seventies when I was searching for steel guitar in different forms of music other than country at the time. This is some fine work by my teacher Neil and needs to be exposed. As I understand,Neil used a Matchbro on some cuts which I wish I had..just currious as to what other useful effects come with it. All the best of luck with CD sales Teach..Keep pickin' Bill in Vegas

I took a lesson from Neil yesterday, and he played some of the cuts off the CD...MAN! What a great album! I can't wait to get a copy. All I can say is that the steel is awesome. 15 bux for 15 cuts is a deal and a half!

Neil, Thanks for the great time and we will do it again soon. What you taught me yesterday was invaluable.

Hi Jason,
Thanks for the nice comments that you've made about our new PORCH PICKER c.d. "Still Safe at Home." I would be more than happy to personally autograph any copy that is ordered. All one has to do is request it when they place their order. I do want to thank both Bill Nauman and John Sims for their kind comments. Bill, I used the Matchbro on two songs. The only other effects that I used was my Lexicon MPX 100 processor which I always use for a studio plate reverb sound. John, I enjoyed teaching you yesterday and look forward to our next lesson. Anybody else interested in taking one on one lessons need only e-mail me at neilflanz@mindspring.com.Thanks again to everybody for their nice comments.

As I've already goit a copy Neil, I guess I'll have to wait until we meet in person, that way you can sing it for me.
Everyone else can request it, which is cool, thanks Neil.

I really have no trouble saying great things about a musical project which is great music, and this falls into that catergory.
Nuff said.
